I find it intriguing that the smart, hardworking decent young women and young men no longer throw themselves at princes and princesses. The quality of consorts has really sunk and I find it intriguing that despite their privilege and power, they got only second rate types as their consorts.

The quality of consorts has really sunk and I find it intriguing that despite their privilege and power, they got only second rate types as their consorts. And why would they? Why should a smart and educated architect, doctor or scientist leave her career to be a glorified plaque-unveiler? Imagine if Harry or William were dating an enterpreneur. How long would it take for toxic british press to start accusing her of trying to ''cash in '' on her royal connections? Does marrying a millionaire or royal really trumps education and building a career?

I don't think Beatrice's spouse counts as an aristocrat. His family is Italian, although he was educated in England. His title was extinguished when the Italians voted out all such titles...not that the Italian aristocrats and nobles pay any atention to that.
Previous queen consorts were active jn England They actively sponsorednor served as patrons to charities, aand helped provide sources for assistance, education, etc. Much as Mary of Denmark and Maxima of the Netherlands do. Camilla is active with Osteoporosis , and sex abuse. It is with Katherine we have a commoner do-nothing. Meghan, even when pregnant, helped set up the Cookbook- whose royalties still support the Community Kitchen, and the Smart Works which provides basicboffice clothing for women reentering the work force. And she received grief instead of praise from the royal family.

Kate is a middle class suburban type who was not raised in a cosmopolitan setting and she was not required to get out of her suburban culture. Kate wants so badly to be treated as an equal, but she lacks sophistication and a willingness to at least TRY to broaden her horizons and mind.

They use to marry royals and they would bring a nation or some contribution, to their new nation. Commoners can not do that , nor royals anymore I suspect, so it's a free for all on who wants fame, and guaranteed spending.

Carole Middleton desperately wanted to elevate herself from her working class sink estate roots. She allegedly used every trick in the book to reel Willy boy in and sadly he fell for it thereby hastening the end of the Monarchy having introduced such a really awful and totally unsuitable family. Even Pippa’s FIL was awaiting a court case for rape and abuse.

One thing I have noticed, is the decrease in grandeur; Charles married Diana in high nuptial mass and for a long time there was just an endless parade of excess. With Camilla he married her in a simple civil ceremony and has agreed to downgrade his level of coronation grandeur that would otherwise be his in exchange for being allowed to have Camilla crowned. The new King of Spain had a very simple swearing in ceremony and ended up forgoing a huge procession and go figure, I think it was the price he had to pay to marry Letizia.
