www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/juan-carloss-fall-from-grace-in-spain-and-the-precarious-future-of-the-worlds-monarchiesJuan Carlos’s Fall from Grace in Spain and the Precarious Future of the World’s Monarchies By Jon Lee Anderson August 25, 2020 It has been a hundred years since the bloodbath of the First World War finished off several of Europe and the Middle East’s most iconic monarchies—including the Russian, the Austro-Hungarian, and the Ottoman. Along with them went the sacrosanct notions of God, king (or queen), and country that had buttressed them through centuries of dynastic rule and, indeed, driven millions of young soldiers to their deaths in the trenches as cannon fodder. A dozen royal houses have endured since then, but these are decorative fripperies. The ongoing pomp of kings and queens and their offspring may be entertaining to American and Chinese tourists, and help sell copies of Hello!, but the royalist fire in the belly is long gone for most Europeans. The one monarchy with any punch left is the British Crown, mainly thanks to the fact that Queen Elizabeth II, who is now ninety-four, is an authentically historic figure and has been in the public eye since the hallowed days of Winston Churchill and the Blitz. In the diminished Britain of the Boris Johnson era—amid the bungled coronavirus-pandemic response and the never-ending chaos of Brexit—the Queen is practically the only remaining national institution. The same cannot be said for her children or their spouses.

Corinna Larsen bought the Chyknell Hall Estate in Shropshire in 2015 - three years after receiving €65million (£58million) from the then-monarch. Larsen has told prosecutors in Geneva she paid £6million for the mansion and spent a similar amount renovating it, according to testimony seen by El Pais. " "Larsen, a Danish-born business consultant also known as Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, has been under investigation for suspected money laundering since 2018. She has told Swiss prosecutors she bought the property through a trust fund registered in Panama that listed her son, who was 13 at the time, as its beneficiary. The 200-acre estate in Shropshire includes a mansion with 11 bedrooms, a library, a swimming pool and cricket field."

A truly gorgeous little family unit - I love them all. Jury's out on Felipe's mother for me ... there's something I don't like about her but I'm not sure what it is. A daughter of the "pushy" Queen Fredericka? Wikipedia entry (take of it what you will) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederica_of_Hanover
I just think Sofia is a lot more assertive now that she is Queen Mother and no longer expected to remain in the world of decorous consort. A lot of women become more assertive as they become older. She is the Queen Mother now and her son, who is a King, is expected to bow to her. According to the ways of their world, Sofia now answers to no one.

You know, I just wonder if everyone would ever remember that Juan Carlos was instrumental in the overthrow of the Fascist regime in Spain and did in fact end up trying to convince then-King Constantine of Greece to remain in Greece and fight against the Junta that was fighting to take over. He begged Constantine to fight with his people and Constantine instead fled to save his own skin. Juan has had mistresses, but what King has not? As for the rest of it, I dislike how Felipe seems to think he is better than his father. Bad attitude and I do believe that Juan has been unfairly judged.
As an ex-King, he has the right to suit himself, not answer to anyone.

That's why it's so awful what he allegedly did now - enriching himself and his mistress to the tune of 10's of millions of dollars. He rather tarnished his own legacy - and not every King has mistresses. I don't think it's looking good for him from an ethical standpoint. Not looking good for him at all. His ex or on and off mistress doesn't seem like an honest character either.

I think she's of strong stock and is no push-over. She really doesn't have to answer to anyone, does she?

No, Sofia does not. Nor should she. She should not have to answer to the son she carried and bore and she should not have to answer to her DIL who is only there by marriage.

That Corinna is obviously common white trash and did not know how to behave. She tries to play at being some naive innocent who surprise, surprise!, doesn't know how her own choices could effect other people. Time to grow up, lady.

^That is such a wearisome attitude. I am fed up with fully grown adults actually pretending to be these ingenues. At eighteen that attitude should begin to fade.

I don't think he should have to answer to anyone over ANYTHING. No one has any business expecting him to answer to anyone. As for his scandals, I do not think they should have resulted in him abdicating the throne.

Maybe they resent the fact that Felipe is vacationing in Mallorca and not doing anything to actually alleviate their struggles. He hasn't done anything to help and he hasn't even stayed safe inside the palaces so he doesn't run the risk of exposing himself to infection.

www.euronews.com/2020/11/03/spanish-court-takes-over-new-investigation-of-ex-king-juan-carlos-iSpanish court takes over new investigation of ex-king Juan Carlos I By Associated Press • last updated: 03/11/2020 Spanish Supreme Court prosecutors have taken over a new investigation into the financial activities of ex-King Juan Carlos, who recently left Spain to live in an unspecified country following the opening of probes against him in Spain and Switzerland. The State Prosecutor's office Tuesday confirmed the court had taken charge of a new investigation after Spanish online daily elDiario.es reported that anti-corruption prosecutors were probing the alleged use by the former king, ex-Queen Sofia and some family members of credit cards linked to foreign accounts not in their names. Spanish government spokeswoman María Jesús Montero declined to comment on the case, but said the government hoped it would be clarified as soon as possible. It's official: Spain's missing former king, Juan Carlos I, is in the UAE Spain's ex-King Juan Carlos: From hero of democracy to tainted exile The prosecutor's office gave no details of the probe, but private news agency Europa Press said prosecutors confirmed it concerned the case mentioned by elDiario.es. Europa Press didn't name the prosecutors who provided that information. A prosecutor's statement said they were also investigating the leaking of the anti-corruption probe to a media outlet.
