www.rbth.com/history/333281-russian-roots-of-prince-philipBoth paternal and maternal ancestors of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, have something to do with Russia and its Imperial family. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark), husband of Queen Elizabeth II, is descended, on his maternal side, from a German-Polish couple, who met while on service to the Russian Imperial Family. His mother Princess Alice of Battenberg (1885-1969) was a niece to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia and a second cousin to Emperor Nicholas II. On the side of his father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark (1882-1944), he is a descendant of the Romanovs – Nicholas I of Russia was a grandfather to Philip’s grandmother.

George V could have placed them anywhere on his vast empire and the royals would have been safe and would not have been any kind of trouble at all. it's not like Nicholas II was asking for a share in ruling England, he just wanted to get out and into safety. I honestly think that it was a betrayal of another fellow monarch and I sometimes wonder how different things would have been if the Imperial Family would have been saved. Chances are there would have been four marriageable royals for Edward VIII and Bertie to marry and who knows how different things would have been. Then there is the fact that the princesses would have been relatives and that alone would have cemented the security of the British monarchy. Four Russian princesses with direct lineal claims to the headship of the House of Romanov and I also think that it would be ideal for the princesses since all that they had known was the royal way of life. At the very least, he would have honored his responsibilities as a fellow family member and there really is no justification for leaving his relatives to die so brutally.
