Kate Middleton may have received deerstalking lessons from Prince Charles but little sister Pippa appears to be a better shot.

The party planner, who is dating diamond heir Simon Youngman, shot 23 birds including ducks, pheasant and partridge on holiday in Scotland last week.

‘The total bag was 300, so my modest 23 wasn’t so good actually and I found the partridge quite disconcerting, they are so small,’ Pippa, 23, told me at the Tiffany & Co Somerset House winter party.

‘I had a small twitchy gun which bashed me about a bit and I have a sore chin and shoulder now, not to mention head. We had a whale of a time and were all feeling very hung-over on the flight back!’

Royal Wedding? It may never happen, says Kate Middleton's mother

Kate Middleton’s mother fears her daughter will never become a member of the Royal Family, I can reveal.

Kate, 26, continues to insist she is ‘not bothered’ that Prince William has yet to propose after a six-year courtship.

But her mother Carole, who reportedly encouraged Kate to enrol at the university of St Andrews when William joined, is less relaxed about the situation.

The 53-year-old former air hostess, who recently broke her silence to claim that she and her family have never courted publicity, has confided to friends that she fears a Royal Wedding may never take place.

‘Carole is very concerned that it might not happen,’ a friend tells me. ‘She was at a social event recently and Kate and William came up in conversation. Carole said, “Of course, we just don’t know what Kate’s going to do now.”

‘The feeling is very much that there might not be a wedding at all.’

It had been widely expected that an engagement would be announced in the New Year and at one stage, I’m told, there were several dates earmarked for a Royal Wedding.

But plans have been put on ice after William announced he will next month sign up for seven-and-a-half years’ service with the RAF. Meanwhile, there has been no invitation to Sandringham for Kate this Christmas.

‘Carole is very concerned about Kate’s position,’ added the friend. ‘She said Kate can’t do a normal day job because she gets so much attention from photographers every time she goes to work. The truth is, Kate’s living a pretty boring existence working at her parents’ business and keeping a low profile, which is what William has asked her to do.’

The young Royals have had to rein in their partying as the nation struggles through the economic crisis, but it seems William needs to whisk Kate away somewhere special for the New Year to lift her spirits.

Princes take extra leave for a bond of brothers

Princes William and Harry are extending their Christmas holiday to enjoy each other’s company – and fit in a brotherly bonding break – before their military careers send them on different paths for the next six months.

The Princes joined the Royal Family for the traditional Christmas gathering at Sandringham before heading off on separate holidays with their girlfriends.

But, according to my Royal mole, the pair are expected to return to London to spend some time together – and have pencilled in a ‘boys only’ shooting trip in Buckinghamshire in early January.

The brothers have decided to take extended leave of a couple of days because they then face six months apart at different training bases.

However, the Princes are delighted they will be reunited in the summer when Harry will be posted to the same base as William for helicopter training.

The aide said: ‘The boys have been posted together at RAF Shawbury near Shrewsbury. They will be spending the whole summer together at the same airbase learning to fly helicopters. Harry is delighted as he and his brother are usually poles apart because of their military commitments.’

Harry, 24, who wants to be an attack helicopter pilot, flew off to Mauritius on Boxing Day for a break with girlfriend Chelsy Davy and her family. He will return to training in the New Year at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop in Hampshire before his summer stint at Shawbury.

William, 26, who is training to be an RAF search-and-rescue pilot, is thought to be flying out to the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique, to join Kate Middleton at the £8,000-a-week Blue Watersvilla, which has a stunning swimming pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea. William is due to head for Shawbury in mid-January.

Not surprisingly, the Royal girlfriends are said to be delighted that the brothers have decided to extend their Christmas break. ‘They have been looking forward to their holidays as they know they will be spending a lot of time apart this year,’ added my source.

It’s not just a passion for polo and country pursuits that Prince William and Kate Middleton share – the couple love puppies and both received new pooches for Christmas...in William’s case a black labrador.

A friend says: ‘William’s beloved gun dog Widgeon, who was given to him when he was 14 by his mother, is old and poorly so Kate suggested it would be a great idea to get him a puppy to keep them company on walks.’

Kate – who turned 27 on Friday – got a handsome black spaniel called Otto.
He will be the perfect companion for her when William heads off on an 18-month RAF training stint later this month.

Now Kate Middleton the hot shot becomes a deer-stalker

Kate Middleton is to take up deer-stalking as a serious pastime – a move likely to infuriate animal rights campaigners already enraged that she shoots game.

Prince William recently bought his girlfriend shooting paraphernalia, including a Swarovski stalking scope, for her birthday and I’m told Kate is now looking forward to her first stalk.

Kate is already an impressive shot and I recently revealed how she helped choose a gundog for Prince William’s Christmas present.

‘Kate happily accompanies beaters while the Princes shoot pheasants, but this season she has been more keen to stand at the pegs with the guns,’ says a source. ‘Now she’s looking forward to bagging her first set of Royal antlers.’

Sources say Kate has booked in some summer-season deer-stalking target practice at an estate close to her parents’ home in Berkshire and has decided to take up her boyfriend’s hobby so that they can spend more time together. It seems Kate has yet to be ‘blooded’, a ritual that involves a hunter’s forehead being smeared with the blood of their first kill.

‘This is another transition into the Royal fold,’ says a source. ‘You can’t marry one of the boys without loving their lifestyle and hobbies.’

Kate's decision to take up shooting may have been influenced by her sister Pippa who, as I revealed in November, bagged several birds on a trip with chums in Perthshire.

It will certainly be cosy when Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy visit their Princes at their new military barracks.

Both Kate’s amour William and Chelsy’s man Harry have been allocated single rooms.

Wills, 26, enrolled at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire last week to become an RAF search and rescue pilot.

He was told he is allowed ‘occasional visits’ – but there is only a single bed in his modest bedroom.

‘As William is single, he gets a smaller room with a single bed,’ my military source says. ‘If he wants a double bed, he’ll have to buy one.’

Harry, 24, enrolled at Middle Wallop Army base in Hampshire last week to become an Army Air Corps helicopter pilot.

I am told he was similarly miffed that his £150-a-month en suite was furnished with only a single bed.

Pilot Harry crashes – at his brother William's bachelor pad

Prince William will have another friendly face about the house he is renting as a weekend bolthole for himself and girlfriend Kate Middleton.

I can reveal that the stone cottage, close to the brothers’ RAF training base at Shawbury, Shropshire, will also be used by Prince Harry over the summer.

Royal aides believe that having William and Harry in the same house will solve a security headache, while also allowing the Princes the privacy they crave.

William, 26, is spending a year at RAF Shawbury in his bid to become a helicopter search-and-rescue pilot. Harry, 24, who is training for the Army Air Corps, will join his brother at Shawbury for the summer.

The cottage is owned by a close friend of the Royal Family and a source said: ‘William had a similar pad on the Balmor@l estate to which he would escape with Kate from St Andrews University, where they shared a house with other students.

'Harry was initially going to have his own place in Shropshire but there was an issue over the extra security that would be needed at two sites so it seemed sensible for the Princes to share. The added bonus is that they can keep each other’s secrets about what goes on in their bachelor pad.’

As part of their training, the pair would normally expect to travel as far as Peru on team-building courses. But because of security concerns, as well as the effects of the credit crunch, they may have to settle for something closer to home.

‘Cadets get adventure weeks which they usually use for hill-walking in Peru or canoeing in America,’ says a source. ‘They are given a budget and are allowed to choose their destination.

‘But with the Princes, Scotland or Wales might be a more realistic option because of security concerns. In the current economic climate, military bosses are also concerned that the jaunts should not be seen as jollies.’

Last week, I revealed that there was a huge security review at Shawbury ahead of the Princes’ arrival, partly because the limited number of training aircraft makes it hard to keep the Royals anonymous in the air.

Chelsy Davy fumes over Kate Middleton's home truths

Having bonded as Royal girlfriends over the past four years, the friendship between Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy appears to have turned a little sour.

Chelsy, 23, who broke up with Prince Harry in January, has distanced herself from Prince William’s girlfriend, who remains very much in the Royal fold.

Ironically, it was 27-year-old Kate to whom Chelsy turned to when she split from Harry for the first time two years ago, but I’m told Chelsy is not impressed with Kate’s latest advice.

‘When they last saw each other Kate told Chelsy not to make such a fuss about Harry being away,’ says a friend. ‘She also told Chelsy to ignore rumours he was playing around. Kate’s thoughts were that it comes with the territory.’

I’m told it hasn’t helped that Kate’s close chum, society girl Astrid Harbord, 24, was recently snapped going back to Clarence House with Harry after a night out clubbing.

Another Middleton joins the party...

Kate's sister Pippa is the latest Middleton to venture into the party business.

Kate is currently working for the family’s successful website Party Pieces, which sells party bags and essentials, and her younger brother James, 21, has set up a firm that supplies cupcakes to the family business.

Now I hear 25-year-old Pippa is getting in on the act by setting up an events company.

A source says: ‘She has been learning the ropes at a party and wedding events firm called Table Talk for more than a year. Now she wants to give it a go on her own.’

Wedding bells for Royal friends...

While Kate must wait patiently for William to pop the question, their close friend Oli Baker has announced his engagement.

Oli, 25, is a fellow graduate of St Andrews University – where Kate and Wills met. ‘He is marrying girlfriend Mel who was Kate’s flatmate in London,’ says a friend. ‘They are the last set of close friends of Wills and Kate at St Andrews to announce a wedding. It must be tough for Kate.’

Fergus Boyd, another of Kate’s ex-flatmates, recently got engaged to Sandrine Janet.

No more parties for Bea...

Princess Beatrice is shunning parties to knuckle down to some serious revision for her university history exams.

The 20-year-old Goldsmiths student pulled out of last week’s Fashion Fringe after-party at Guy Pelly’s new London club Tini’s.

‘Beatrice has given up alcohol and partying to concentrate on work,’ says a friend.

‘He has used up his two weeks’ RAF holiday entitlement for 2009, so there’s no way there will be a Royal Wedding this year,’ I’m told.

The Prince was criticised for taking time off from his search-and-rescue training at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire to fly to the French Alps with 27-year-old Kate and her family last month.

The source says: ‘William’s training schedule is very tight and hardly leaves him any free time. He and Kate manage to see each other at weekends at the house he’s rented near the air base.’

Meanwhile, although Prince Harry has enjoyed a number of private meetings with his on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy since they split up, they have ruled out a reunion for the time being.

Chelsy has flown off to South Africa for the Easter holidays alone and, as yet, there are no plans for Harry to join her.

‘Harry has always joined Chelsy on holiday at this time of the year, but she’s gone on her own this time round,’ I’m told.

‘She’s playing hard to get and although she has been seeing Harry, they are taking things slowly. Chelsy’s had a few indiscretions and she’s quite enjoying not being in a committed relationship.’

Prince William flies economy so that in-laws-to-be can go first class on ski trip

Prince William may have upset his pals by pulling the plug on a five-star skiing trip to Klosters over Easter – but he has won some Brownie points with his in-laws-to-be.

William, 26, joined the Middletons on their annual skiing trip to Meribel earlier this month and I’m told he gave his upgrades on the outward BA flight to Kate’s parents, ex-air hostess Carole and Michael.

Passengers on the flight to Geneva report that Wills gave his free upgrades to the First Class section to Mr and Mrs Middleton and instead sat in economy with Kate.

My mole says: ‘Wills had lined up a trip to Klosters with his mates but he decided at the last minute to go to the Three Valleys with Kate and her parents.

‘It was a big step to be invited into the family fold and shows how serious he and Kate have become.

‘They are very happy together and Kate loves the fact that now he’s in the RAF, she sees much more of him.’

Prince William is a step closer to becoming a search-and-rescue pilot after successfully completing the latest stage of his RAF training.

He will now be trained to pilot a Griffin helicopter, an advance on the Squirrel he has been flying and that brother Harry will learn to fly soon.

The brothers, who are sharing a house close to RAF Shawbury, will enjoy a break from training today to compete in the Umbogo team for the Audi Polo Challenge at Coworth Park in Ascot.

‘William and Harry are a bit nervous because they haven’t played for ages,’ says a friend.

‘They are doing it to raise money for their charities, which makes it all worthwhile.’

Their father Prince Charles is famous for championing green issues – now Princes William and Harry are following his example by planting trees at Highgrove and in Windsor Great Park to offset their carbon emissions.

The pair have large carbon footprints due to their use of private flights, cars and motorbikes.

They also compensate for their emissions by donating to the website Climate Care, which is supported by Charles. It promotes tree planting and sustainable energy projects.

A source tells me: ‘Charles persuaded Harry and Wills to offset their carbon footprints by donating to charity and by planting trees.

‘The RAF already offsets the 60-plus hours the Princes clock up while training in helicopters at RAF Shawbury, but their father thought it was about time they started taking responsibility for their personal carbon footprints.’

Earlier this month Prince Charles and his sons appeared in a film with an animated frog to promote the Prince’s Rainforest Project. They were supported by stars including Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and Pele.

Charles’s carbon footprint is included in his annual accounts and was calculated at 3,425 tons of CO2 in 2007. And aides revealed it costs about £10 for every ton the Prince offsets.

Prince Harry planted a tree at the British Memorial Garden in Hanover Square, New York last week

This was evident last week when Harry, 24, flew to New York to raise funds for his African charity Sentebale.

It is thought he will offset the trip by planting trees – and even began his visit by planting a magnolia in the British Memorial Garden in Manhattan’s Hanover Square on Friday.

A Clarence House spokesman said: ‘This is a private matter but the Princes take their responsibility to the environment very seriously.’

Kate Middleton has already endured months apart from Prince William as he concentrates on his military career.

And now she is facing even more time alone when he transfers to Wales at the end of the month. The 27-year-old Prince is being posted to RAF Valley in North Wales where he will continue his training to be a search-and-rescue pilot.

Separation: Patient Kate faces more time away from Prince William as he heads off for training and there are no holidays allowed

He has been told that during his time at the base, there will be no breaks for holidays.

The Prince, known in the air force as William Wales, will leave RAF Shawbury in Shropshire at the end of the month and move to more basic accommodation at his new base. At the moment he shares a private house at Shawbury with his brother Harry.

William is preparing for some of his toughest training yet.

An RAF insider says: ‘It’s going to be a testing time for William and Kate because he will be expected to knuckle down. He will be mastering the basic elemental techniques of search and rescue and there will be no holidays.

‘He is absolutely committed to getting through his 18 months of training and his dream is to get out to the front line.

‘Search and Rescue teams are deployed to Afghanistan and it’s William’s wish to go to war just like his brother did.’

However Kate, also 27, may yet decide to go off and do her own own thing while she waits for William. I’m told she is hatching a plan which could see her heading to the States.

‘What she really wants is to explore her passion for photography and she has thought about spending some time in America,’ says a friend.

William and Kate do have some time together to look forward to – a long weekend at Balmor@l at the end of August.

It will be the first time Kate has been invited to stay while the Queen is in residence, prompting speculation that the couple are getting closer to announcing their engagement.

The summer's weather may have been a mixed bag for most of us, but for Prince William it's turned out brilliantly.

Thanks to superb flying conditions over the past few weeks at RAF Valley in Anglesey, the Prince can enjoy an extended break with girlfriend Kate Middleton over the August bank holiday.

William is training at Valley to be a search-andrescue helicopter pilot - and the conditions have allowed his course to get so far ahead of schedule that he is in line for some extra time off.

The couple, who haven't had a break together since their skiing trip in March, may go to Scotland. William has also booked another day off next month to see his father Prince Charles. Will they discuss a wedding announcement? Wait and see.

Meanwhile, Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall are putting pressure on the Royal Household to be able to announce their engagement. The pair have been dating since 2003 and had hoped to wed this year but were pipped to the post by Lord Freddie Windsor, who is marrying actress Sophie Winkleman next month. 'The Palace has to give them the nod,' says my source. 'Zara is Royal and there are certain protocols. There's still the question of whether William and Kate will make an announcement. There can't be two at once.'

Kate Middleton shows Richard Branson she means business as billionaire gives her advice

Her parents may have built up a multi-million-pound company, but Kate Middleton has turned to Sir Richard Branson in a bid to sharpen her business acumen.

Prince William’s girlfriend has had a series of meetings with the billionaire, who has helped set up a partnership between his Virgin empire and her parents’ Party Pieces mail-order business.

The Middletons’ firm will now offer ‘experience days’ – such as surfing lessons and trips to football grounds and recording studios – in conjunction with Virgin.

A source said: ‘Kate is very close friends with Sir Richard’s daughter Holly and has had several meetings with Richard.

'She’s kept in regular contact and asked Sir Richard for his business advice. She respects him and thinks his guidance will assist her carving a new career for herself.

‘He was only too happy to help her and has been instrumental in helping to set up the partnership with Party Pieces.’

In the past Kate, 27, has been criticised as ‘workshy’ for her lack of a proper career. But sources say she now has an increased role at the Berkshire-based family firm.

‘When Kate graduated from St Andrews University, she didn’t really know what she wanted to do,’ the source went on.

‘She thinks the criticism of her being workshy is unfair, as she’s really committed to her marketing role at her parents’ firm.

‘She has been taking a more active part in the business recently using contacts she’s developed through her relationship with William and she hopes the relationship with Virgin will help make the company even more successful.

‘Kate is determined to increase the Party Pieces profile and thought this would be the perfect partnership.’

Friends of Kate also say she plans to help restore her family’s reputation after the shocking drug revelations about her uncle Gary Goldsmith – the brother of her mother Carole.

‘Kate’s family are trying to distance themselves from Gary,’ the source added. ‘They really hope they can get away from the idea that they are linked to a drug-taker and focus on moving in the right direction.’

Kate Middleton is planning to step down from her parents’ internet party supplies firm at the end of the year – to concentrate on photography.

Prince William’s girlfriend will head to New York for two weeks in January to work with photographer Annie Leibovitz’s muse – and close friend of Princes William and Harry – Count Nikolai von Bismarck.

Annie, 59, who worked on the BBC documentary A Year With The Queen, is teaching her art to Nikolai, 21, and he will now pass it on to budding photographer Kate.

A friend of 27-year-old Kate said she had ‘loved’ working at her parents’ firm, Party Pieces, which sells children’s party goods over the internet but is now looking for a different challenge.

‘Kate wants to make her favourite hobby, photography, her full-time career,’ says the friend. ‘She would like to be taken more seriously. She loved implementing new sections of the website to improve Party Pieces. But she needs a new challenge – she wants to do more with her photography than take pictures of children in party hats.’

Kate, who earned the nickname ‘Waity Katie’ because she is apparently happy to hang on until William proposes, hopes that spending time in New York and then in London with Nikolai will help build up her new career.

‘Nikolai worked with the legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino when he was 16 and is now focusing on portraiture with Annie Leibovitz. He is well connected on the photography circuit and Kate is thrilled to be gaining some valuable advice,’ the friend adds.

‘Nikolai initially introduced Kate to the idea of working with Testino but there was not time in either diary to accommodate it. With his help, she hopes to get settled in photography in time for an engagement announcement with Prince William around Easter.

‘It wouldn’t be fitting for a future Queen to run a party website.’

Meanwhile, Kate and William, also 27, havehad to cancel plans to holiday at Villa Bang Bang, the Ibiza home of Kate’s uncle Gary Middleton, after he was caught on camera with cocaine boasting about his Royal connections.

May Day! Prince William the would-be rescue pilot lands in a mess

Prince William has shared an impressive farmhouse with brother Harry at RAF Shawbury for several months – but he will soon be downgrading to more modest accommodation.

William, 27, who is training to become a search and rescue pilot, will live in the base’s mess when he transfers to RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales.

It will cost him £200 a month to stay in the old white building at the unglamorous camp.

‘It is a bit like an old hotel,’ an officer tells me. ‘It has reasonable but not grand rooms. You can buy your own bed if you don’t like the one provided.’

William spent a month at RAF Valley improving his flying skills in July and will return next year when he will learn to fly a Sea King helicopter.

His girlfriend Kate Middleton will be allowed to visit, but she has to ask for permission if she wants to stay over.

Meanwhile William and Harry are planning their first joint charity venture in Africa, a continent close to both their hearts.

Having sensibly decided to join forces to make their charities as effective as possible under the auspices of The Princes’ Charity Forum, William, patron of Mountain Rescue, and Harry, who set up his own charity Sentebale to help the children of Lesotho, are overseeing a project in which volunteers from Mountain Rescue will travel to Lesotho to refurbish an orphanage in Semonkong.

‘The Mountain Rescue team are also planning to pass on survival skills to the boys, some of whom are as young as six and have to work in sub-zero temperatures as herders,’ I’m told.

Kate Middleton is planning a Christmas warm-up for what Palace insiders are calling a ‘Princess-in-waiting role’ next year.

The Middleton camp hopes the move – which will involve an increasing number of charity appearances as well as duties alongside Prince William – will help endear Kate to the British people.

With plans for a Royal wedding already in the early stages, Kate – nicknamed ‘Waity Katie’ due to her long-running romance without, as yet, so much as an engagement ring from the Prince – will prepare for her new role by fronting several charity parties in the run-up to Christmas for her parents’ company, Party Pieces.

‘She plans to raise her profile by doing more charity work and is genuine about her concerns – it is not done for some ulterior motive,’ says a source.

‘Kate cares, but in the past she has had to be careful where she treads.

‘Party Pieces allows her to increase her charity work without being compared too closely to Diana, something courtiers are keen to avoid.

’Party Pieces supports the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which grants the wishes of seriously and terminally ill children and provides entertainment in hospitals.

Kate’s mother Carole says: ‘Party Pieces will provide packs of Christmas goodies, games and decorations – everything that nurses need to create a fun party for children on the wards.

‘Last Christmas we helped Starlight with more than 200 parties for some 10,000 children and we sincerely hope to better that this year.’

Starlight is becoming an important vehicle for Kate to raise her profile as she steps away from running the Party Pieces website.

In September, the company supported a Starlight auction at London’s Saatchi Gallery by donating a party for 20 children.

Kate took centre stage, playing hostess to a table of guests alongside William – and the auction raised more than £100,000.

Meanwhile Kate Middleton’s younger brother James is making his own way in society.

The 22-year-old, who runs a cake-making business, joined the Queen’s cousin, the Marquis of Milford Haven, on a fishing holiday at Nantucket off Cape Cod.

‘In the party was the Marquis’s son Henry, the Earl of Medina, and the Marquis’s stepchildren Harry and Louisa Wentworth-Stanley,’ says a Royal mole.

‘They spent a fortnight fishing and partying – nothing too wild, all very jolly.’

Prince William won’t be disappointing birthday girl Kate Middleton this time

Prince William has made sure his first official overseas visit is carefully scheduled so he doesn’t miss girlfriend Kate Middleton’s birthday.

He has put his foot down over the January tour of New Zealand after missing her last two birthdays.

The Prince has insisted he will not set off until after Kate’s big day on January 9, when she turns 28.

William is now due to fly to New Zealand on January 17 for the official visit.

He will then go on to Australia two days later for an unofficial trip to Sydney and Melbourne, funded by the Queen.

‘William is really thrilled that he will be here to celebrate,’ said a source.

‘Kate is delighted too, especially as he missed her last birthday because he was at RAF Cranwell and the one before that because he was at Sandhurst.’

My source adds: ‘It was William who suggested the trip. He hasn’t been Down Under since he was nine months old.’

The Queen will sparkle less in her Diamond Jubilee year

The Queen is insisting her Diamond Jubilee celebrations are kept low-key – despite courtiers’ hopes for a string of national and international visits.

It follows concerns that the 83-year-old Monarch appeared ‘frail’ when she delivered her speech at the State Opening of Parliament last week.

I understand that Her Majesty wants Prince Charles and Camilla and Princes William and Harry to take over many of the duties to mark her 60 years on the throne in 2012.

Buckingham Palace aides had expected that the Diamond Jubilee, which will fall in the same year as the London Olympics, would be as grand as the 2002 Golden Jubilee celebrations.

On that occasion the Queen carried out an extensive tour of the UK, Canada, Australia and the Caribbean. But courtiers have been told to come up with a revised itinerary with less overseas travel and just a handful of events nationwide for the Queen.

‘There has been a clash of opinion at the Palace between the Queen and her courtiers,’ says a Royal source.

‘They had hoped the Queen would travel around the country to see her subjects, but she is not prepared to undertake an itinerary like last time.’

Palace aides insist she and Prince Philip, 88, are in robust health, but that the Queen wants her children and grandsons to help her out in 2012.

‘The idea is that Charles and Camilla, and William and Harry will travel around the country on her behalf,’ the source added.

‘The Queen wants a low-key Diamond Jubilee largely because Britain has just been through a recession.’

Last week I revealed that 2012 is one of a number of dates being looked at for a Royal wedding for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Queen Victoria is the only other British monarch to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee. She reigned for 63 years and seven months.

A Palace spokesman said: ‘We’re not speculating on plans for the Diamond Jubilee at this stage, but it is entirely untrue to suggest that the Queen has requested not to travel overseas in 2012 or, indeed, to reduce her UK programme.’
