It's strange, but I feel sympathy for her. She was an awful person, but it would have been very big of the Queen or QM to show her mercy and make sure she was at least treated decently when she was so frail, she wasn't much worse that anyone in (or soon to be married in) to the royals.

BUT! I could forgive all of Wallis mistakes, all of them. If she had just shown some remorse for what she had done to the royal family, for being pro Nazi, if she had just thought about some one other than her self for once. But no. That was beyond her.
It actually doesn’t surprise me that no one was their to up her in her last days. When you live the sort of life Wallis did you don’t have “real” friends you have staff and dinner guests. That's what I mean when I say she got what she deserved. If you live a shallow selfish life, and the time comes when you need someone to help you, that help won't come because you have done nothing to earn it.

Nice of her to be upset while the BRF was also breaking the rationing on food, clothing and essential supplies when guests weren't around to witness it.

When they visited the US, the Presidential staff was surprised at how much clothing the royals had, more than ration coupons could have bought, and how the royal staff complained that they weren't serving as much food as the royals were being served daily at BP. I think Wallace was what she was, a vapid, Nazi-sympathizing clotheshorse until the end, but personally, I think someone who never grows as a person or realizes what they've done wrong is a very sad and pathetic person worthy of pity. At least then, you come out as the bigger person.

Wallis and Edward were fawned over by the Nazis and she was even addressed as "HRH" by them; then of course the supposedly secret discussion to take over the Throne after the Nazis successfully invaded Britain and after the King and Queen were executed Wallis and Edward would be enthroned as puppet monarchs with Elizabeth and Margaret as heirs. Ok I can definitely see QM's feelings about Wallis and Edwards and I'm glad she never let up even in Wallis' final years. I think people like Wallis should suffer like that in order to evaluate their life and somehow make amends.

It was a just penance. She destroyed the legitimate succession, she paraded around the world like a Pretender Queen Consort, and she humiliated her second husband while cavorting with Edward. Then of course, she was also supposedly cheating on Edward, while married to Edward so it's not like she was some maligned saint. Wallis also spoke out against the US helping Britain, branding us 'suckers' if in fact the US did come to the aid of the Allies. Got the karma she deserved.

I read about Wallace and apparently she was hounded by Edward to marry him and hse was supposedly happy with her second husband. I wonder if something might have been prevented if Queen Mary had talked to Wallace heart to heart about possibly ending this, that Edward might have successfully been shoved off.

I read a biography about her and it seemed like Wallis Simpson was a woman whose ambition was quite materialistic and was quite power-driven. She was not obliged to divorce her husband and accept the Prince's requests if what you read Kuei Fei is true.
She was known to be the one who was wearing the pants in the relationship so I guess she played her part quite well to make Edward madly in love with her...enough to even renounce his throne. I guess they expected Germany would win the war and then they would have the throne of England back.

Anyone who has followed those lives (The Windsors) has read just about everything in print about them. I’m not sure what the fascination is (I’m sure there are those who claim to know), even though I am drawn to it. There is something about those lives that is intriguingly pathetic, and yet compelling, and yet frivolous, and yet profoundly impressive in human terms.
Maybe, but it was One Life just the same. Sorry girl. The Duchess began to lose it within a couple of years. Meanwhile in the staff, (the downstairs, mainly the office staff – lawyers, doctors, etc.) had their own drama watching the lone fish in the shrinking goldfish bowl. All of this is reported like a Diary or a business calendar.

Hugo Vickers has been obsessed with these sorts of characters all his life and he is very good at it. He is an excellent observer, and a dramatist when need be. You read about who came and visited, who answered the telephone, what was said, not said, who complained about the food, or whom did the Duchess really detest and more and more. The Duchess herself is a lonely, almost absent figure in the drama. Mainly because she’s at the end of her life, and it was apparent to her right after the Duke died.

And then comes the professional helpers. Aha! The ones, who in the name of assistance (legal, medical), begin to dissect the center until their victim is stranded on a rock, at sea. Because the Duchess had no family living, and because the Duke had set everything up (in terms of Wills, distribution of property, etc.), she knew nothing. And she had much, money, jewels, art, antiques. They had lived like Royals. The house on the Bois was small compared to Buckingham Palace, but it was palatial and grand. The treasures were far fewer and the staff far smaller than back home in London, but kid, it’s “the air” that’s different up there. You can’t even buy it, so forget about it.


The Duchess came from nothing – almost literally; she was born 117 years ago today in a simple clapboard two story house in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania – but by the time she was turning grey in the mind, she was Her Royal Highness through and through -- despite the fact that the British Royal Family refused to allow her to hold that title. Remember they did the same thing with Diana. Just nasty, that’s all. Like Andrea Peyser. Then Camilla emerged, and who cares.

It’s none of the above that make this book so compelling, however. It’s the greed, detailed by author Vickers, like a work supervisor’s clock in a factory. A clock factory. Enter the lawyers and the doctors and the friends and Earl Mountbatten representing himself as the “Relatives” looking for what’s handy, what’s available, and what can be taken without anyone ever knowing the difference. The “anyone” in this story is the Duchess herself -- rendered almost lifeless, confined to her room. Soon she was a prisoner, whether or not she knew it.

The saga of Brooke Astor and her son came to mind over and over. The Duchess of Windsor had no children. She had in name only the connection to the British Royal Family. She had some friends but mainly she had lawyers and advisers who began to run her life and assume she was going to be dead shortly. This is the way of all flesh, it would seem.

In the end, she withered away. She couldn’t sleep. Evidently, all her life, she could never sleep. She wouldn’t take pills for it either although she took a lot of medication prescribed for her illnesses. She never ate much (the “too thin/too rich” syndrome) and she was quite a heavy drinker. Bad for the digestion of course.

So she just withered away, losing her mind. No one could have restored that for her anyway. She could only be a victim. This is not a unique situation. It was true also of Mrs. Astor. There was only so much that could be done and in the end, with all (mostly) good intentions on both sides, it all came undone. And everybody lost. Fortunately Mrs. Astor, like the Duchess was never around to notice what her life had wrought.

Meanwhile, the book. It has a very smart cover to remind you of the art of that style. And a perfect blurb by the (also compelling) writer/ historian A. N. Wilson – “Definitively brilliant” – which is concisely true. And yet, it is pedestrian in its overall content. Ordinary. Annoying. Infuriating. Sad. Hopeless. With no mystery other than the vagaries of the human mind, and its all too compatible … greed.

I think the Queen Mother was irrational; Wallis was divorced the first time because of abuse, second time because Edward put horrendous pressure on Wallis and it damaged the marriage and Ernst wanted to marry someone else and ended up being the one who filed. Second, Wallis was still interested in being married to Ernst and didn't want her marriage to end. Edward was completely out of his mind and also unstable.

There was nothing in the UK constitution or tradition that prevented Wallis from becoming Consort. After all, a hatred of divorce started when the Hanovers came to Britain and then reinforced the whole idea of divorce being bad. The Queen Mother wasn't in an abusive relationship and never had to marry to get through life. The Queen Mother had the problem of being unfairly judgmental about Wallis' circumstances in life.

He may have had kids but they weren't legitimate so not relevant and the evidence, after two prevoius marriages with no children would suggest that Wallis couldn't have children.

If so the royal family would be the same as it is today - with one exception - I suspect Edward VIII would have been more accepting of Camilla as Charles' wife in 1971 and would have encouraged him to marry for love then.

Wallis' first marriage was abusive and she was good to get out of it; the second was good, but there was no other way for her to survive without marriage. As for Edward, he had the right idea about a lot of things, but was hamstrung about who he could marry, just like Charles.

Meanwhile, Charles and Camilla did worse to more people and go figure, get to get married.

Wallis was the excuse for his abdication. Edward was unstable and was described as not maturing beyond adolescence which is a nice way of saying mentally challenged. He was mad as a hatter and was certainly not a good representative for the Brits especially during the political climate at the time. He was a security risk, the FBI files on him are particularly interesting. He let the Italians know that the U.S. had broken their code for example. Not exactly someone you want in the possession of state secrets. Edward admired Hitler and later told the Germans to continue to bomb London and that they would surrender.

Edwards father, King George didn't think he was fit to be King. The Archbishop of Canterbury believed him to be "definitely abnormal psychologically if not mentally or physically". The Royal Doctor was convinced his "mor@l development had for some reason been arrested during his adolescence". The prime minister and others thought he was mad. He used his mistresses to fill his need for a mother figure.

Edward was the extreme of all Windsor men.

Wallis didn't want to marry him. The British Government, the courtiers, and the RF used the situation to their advantage to get rid of Edward.

Wallis was a social climber and user, who finally got beat at her own game. Wallis was used the same way she used others. She hurt a lot of people and unfortunately paid the ultimate price. An exiled, scorned woman who died a slow painful death alone.

One way or another Elizabeth would have become Queen. I don't think Edward could have held onto the throne even if the political climate had been different.

The majority of parliament and the British people favored appeasement on the eve of war. WWI had a lasting impression and most Brits hoped to avoid another war.

Edward's opinion on appeasement was not unique.

His actions after the Brits entered the war is hardly admirable. He was a traitor. Whether his actions were the result of ill intent, nativity, or stupidity, is debatable.

Oh, I agree...the Duke of Windsor had to be removed from power........

its just too bad that they didn't retire the entire royal family at the same time. Besides sucking off the taxpayers, what exactly do they bring to England? Please don't tell me tourists, since during the tourist high season, the queen bucks off to Scottland to relax at her country estate.

They didn't get rid of the monarchy apparently because the monarchy had a huge stranglehold on the mind of the nation and fr some reason, viewed royals as being the only types that had the time and money to donate to charities and represent the nation as some sort of ambassador.

As for sucking off of the taxpayers, well, I have no idea how on earth the public lets them do it.

It is amazing to me that this RF is still around. They have done so many terrible things and they just keep on getting away with it at the British taxpayers expense. They control the media there. Maybe with the advent of the Internet, more of their heinous behavior will be exposed and they will be dealt with in time.

I'll never understand why the exile, why Edward couldn't just live as a family member even if he wasn't reigning as king. He was already out of the succession and the public and government would never have allowed him to try for the throne again. As far as I can see, he was effectively neutered.

I watched a documentary where it was said that Edward apparently had been not only meeting with Hitler but perhaps also had shared informations. I would think Edward should have been met with legal actions after the war. So the exile was the best solution to everyone.

^ There's also this story about the Duke of Kent and bear with me as I only know the bare bones of it but a growing number of commentators are claiming the plane he was travelling in was deliberately downed and he was killed to stop him communicating between the Nazis and the Duke of Windsor.

There was allegedly a plan to install DoW as a puppet ruler once the King and family had evacuated to Canada in exile. It is confirmed that a plane was kept on constant alert ready to fly the RF out of the country.

Also I believe the documents on this are subject to a 100 year embargo unlike most documents which have 50 years. Further it is the reason that Sir Anthony Blunt made secret missions to Germany (I think) during the war to bring back correspondence between DoW and DoK and the Nazis. Which is why he was never prosecuted when he was revealed as a Soviet spy in the 1970s.

It all is supposed to have something to do with Rudolph Hess who was alleged to have also been on the Duke of Kent's plane and was killed and an imposter kept in Spandau prison all those years.

Yes sounds like the Man in the Iron Mask. Sorry if this sounds jumbled - which it is but it's just bits and pieces I have read over the past year or so and apologies if it's nuts.

Nor was the plane plotted at the anti-aircraft control room for the west of Scotland.” McBride concludes from this evidence that someone with great power ordered that Hess should be allowed to land in Scotland. This story was picked up by the German press but went unreported in the rest of the world.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Scott, Hess had told one of his guards that “members of the government” had known about his proposed trip to Scotland. Hess also asked to see George VI as he had been assured before he left Nazi Germany that he had the “King’s protection”. The authors of Double Standards, believe the Duke of Kent, the Duke of Hamilton, Samuel Hoare and Lord Halifax, were all working for the king in their efforts to negotiate with Adolf Hitler.

For some time after 1939, when the war started, the Duke of Windsor was living in Portugal. the country was 'neutral' (like fascist Spain was neutral) and Lisbon was flooded with agents from both the west and the axis powers. The Duke of Windsor entertained many nazi's and caused a big embarassement to the UK government. In the end the UK government send him to the West Indies, out of sight and away from the nazi's.

^I thought he was living in France? I remember that at least he was there when the nazis invaded the country which caused a big embarrassment and Wallis asked for help to get all her things to the nazis? Or maybe my mind is fuzzy because I watched the doc about the DoW a long time ago.

Edward was very popular with the "plebs" while George was still not very accepted. They thought that the establishment had rid of him because he was their ally. So adding the nazi connection exile was the obvious choice.

The Kent accident is very strange simply because there was one more person than they said at first in the plane. So the DoK was bringing his lover to the meeting or they were going to do something else. :cookie: I think the papers about this accident should have been already released but they are "lost".

In the Kitty Kelley book she mentions that the Queen Mother/King George asked for the papers in the nazis hands about the duke of windsor to be given to them and they are supposed to be in Windsor.

His private secretary in later years claimed Edward always planned to abdicate as he did not want to be King with all the responsibilities. The person claimed he became King so he could build up a financial nest egg and then abdicate in comfort. I read in a history of WWII that it was the Americans who finally had enough of his dallying with Nazi's and passing state secrets to them. So they insisted he be sent to Bermuda as governor (off the coast of the US) so they could keep tabs on him.

When you consider his behavior it is understandable that he was sent into exile. Did you know his biographer claims Wallis had many affairs after the marriage which Edward was aware of and tolerated?

Yes Anthony Blunt is a mystery - the Americans kept warning the Brits they had spies and suspected Blunt. But the Brits could not imagine that a well bred Eton Oxford gentleman would be a spy. I think the whole myth of Edward and "the woman he loved" and poor Wallis being ostracized by the British establishment is nonsense - he was a true problem and certainly had no loyalty to the British people or his heritage.
