I am believe I hit the nail on the head of the source of William and Harry's mess.
I think William and Harry are broken victims of narcissistic abuse and did not manage to survive and get out of that mess that they were raised in.
1. Diana. William looked a lot like Diana and as a result he was burdened not just with his mother's image, but with the burden of being like her instead of developing himself and being himself. Harry was assigned the role of manifesting his mother's more carefree side while William was assigned the role of the dutiful stable personality who was there to serve his mother and then serve the nation and then serve his Cinderella who he would marry. Harry was assigned the role of the family screw up and even though he was just starting out in life, the world and his mother assigned him the role of the perpetual party boy. Diana labeled both her sons before they were out of adolescence and it is clear that neither prince could develop a mindset of their own that did not involve their mother being involved.
2. Privacy. Diana and Charles let the press so far into their personal lives that it is clear that the invasion of privacy was caused by themselves, not just the press or staff or lackeys. Charles and Diana both turned their sons into allies in a mess that was avoidable in the first place. neither William or Harry were supposed to be paraded as allies of either parent. Charles never should have worked his sons over into trying to get them to publicly approve and support Camilla and he never should have asked his sons to be part of any part of his mess with Diana. Neither prince had an area of their lives or minds that was theirs and theirs alone and as a result, neither experienced any real inner development. Neither parent gave them the ability to have anything that was entirely their own. After the divorce Diana made them consort with her latest boyfriends and Charles made them receive Camilla.
3. The press. This is where it got worse. The press became intrusive to the point where all professional boundaries were crossed and neither prince was trained and schooled to keep the press at bay. The minute Arthur Edward and Richard Kay started to intrude on official engagements, both reporters should have been sanctioned. The press has been so far gone that Arthur Edwards is mystified that a fully grown man prioritizes his children rather then time with just another reporter. The press crucified William for dumping Kate, a very normal thing for anyone and the press acted like Harry had to adhere to their expectations despite the fact that Harry owed the press nothing. The press is so far gone that it mystifies them that there are boundaries and it mystifies them that Harry is a human being with feelings and needs and preferences of his own. His wanting to make a break is completely understandable. The press has never let up on him and respected the fact that Harry is not that narrative of the feckless adult prince and he was better smarts about people than his dolt brother.

Second, according to the fairytale, no prince is supposed to break up with someone, no prince is supposed to have needs of their own, no prince is supposed to have basic standards for a decent spouse, and no prince is supposed to have wants of their own. William and Harry were raised to be givers by their selfish parents and neither prince broke away from it. As a result, they hooked up with parasites and have been getting drained each and every year. Kate has milked him dry and Meg has really destabilized what stable life Harry had left in the UK. Diana groomed her sons to be perpetual protectors and Charles groomed them to be enablers of Camilla. Princes have been under huge pressure to take responsibly for people who are dysfunctional and nonfunctional and Kate and Meg are a combination of both. William has been burdened with Kate's nonfunctional unwillingness to help herself and contribute in the most basic possible ways in their marriage and we all know about Meg's mess. Neither prince has had a life and neither consort has helped either prince. Harry looks like he can't cope with his wife's latest mess/drama/failure and it is clear that William's life is plain ruined.
