The Princess of Wales’ brave cancer announcement has finally put an end to months of dangerous swirling theories – could it mark a turning point for internet conspiracies? Katie Strick reports

So, there we have it: an answer that finally puts an end to the cruel internet frenzy that became known as Katespiracy. And a tragic one: Kate, the Princess of Wales, has not been abducted by aliens, selected to appear on The Masked Singer or whatever other outlandish, baseless or distasteful rumours various conspiracy theorists wanted us to believe over the two months since her last public appearance. She has cancer. She was diagnosed with it in February after her abdominal surgery, and is currently in the early stages of preventative chemotherapy.

“This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” the future queen, 42, explained in a short personal message filmed in the gardens of Windsor Castle, released last night.

Dressed down on a park bench in a jumper and jeans, Kate shared several truths in the two-minute video: that her condition was discovered after she had major abdominal surgery in January; that she felt well and was “getting stronger every day”; and that she had kept it a secret until now for the sake of her children, George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five. "It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok,” she said in a brave and dignified speech that seemed almost deliberately unedited, pointedly raw.

Just to add, I am sick and tired of our country being milked by these people. Time for a republic then send them off to work like everyone else. And that means strip them of all the money they have milked us of for the last 1000 years.

Completely ignoring facts and reality. Royal apologists are the epitome of hypocrisy. It was concerned,loyal well wishers who were asking for information, but none was forthcoming. i.e. loyal, caring subjects were treated with arrogant disdain. Then the RF pushed blatant lies, rather than the truth, until they came clean. Cancer isn't nice but 1,000 are diagnosed every day, yes 1,000, so it's common.
These grovellers should bear in mind that in 1992 Elizabeth II acknowledged in a speech to the City of London’s Guildhall that “no institution – City, monarchy, whatever – should expect to be free from the scrutiny of those who give it their loyalty”.

I cannot help but think if she was anyone else that preventative chemo would be wait until it's too late then maybe we might help you. This is not the story the right wing palace press want us to believe it is, rather its another slap in the face to ordinary people who pay tax so these entitled misfits can live beyond even a billionaires ability.

And just like that, the speculation stopped; any rumours, falsehoods or US talk show gags finally extinguished and put to bed; a more sobering collective mood moving in in their place. There are likely to be many feeling more than a pang of guilt as they look back at their conversations and social media activity over the last few weeks, knowing what they do now: that the royal family’s silence on Kate’s whereabouts was not a hoax or an abduction or a case of plastic surgery gone wrong, but just a scared, anxious mother-of-three trying to recover from the shock of a cancer diagnosis and doing her best to protect her young family in the meantime. :'(

If William leaves her and forces her out, he will never allow her to live off of the largesse of the Crown. She will have to face the world head on with nothing, she will only leave that family with a bad reputation and a history of being nonprofessional. Even going overseas will bring her no peace since she has no one to assist her and no real clue as to how far gone she is in terms of reputation.

Kate was probably ingrained with the notion that William "belonged" to her from a rather early age. I wouldn't put it past Ca-Ca Carole to have been planning this when Prince William was born; Kate was earmarked from a baby.

She was encouraged and pushed to use almost every trick in the book (and bed) to land and keep William. Changing schools, the gap year, the multi-million dollar flat as a launching pad, stalking, befriending William's crowd, etc - Carole wanted an "in".

None of this respectable, hard-working, middle-class girl done good - no respectable woman worth anything was going to be a casual, part-time f*ck buddy/drinking partner. William very early lost his attraction and no woman wants to deal with a party boy who would never grow up. It gets stale very fast.

I remember the Middletons being "introduced" to the public after the engagement, with Carole trying to look bashful and innocent to this wondrous "new" experience. What a joke - the bloom went off your rose a long time ago, old girl. Don't think a "mother" who teaches her children sexual tricks can dare think she can pretend to be humble Berkshire English stock. You knew the score, CC, and the BRF and the thinking public were well aware of the REAL you and the REAL Kate.

Kate and Carole wanted the their own Diana story. I really believe that. Fame, fortune, doors opening you left and right, never having to really "work" (great for a lazy sod like Waity) and people seemingly eating out of your hand. What a storybook life, eh? They never seemed to understand that they were outsiders then and outsiders they have and will continue to be. They are not so special that they can't be booted out, it's not a matter of when so much as HOW? The Cambridges and Middletons are covering up a lot of dirt; there are some foul and destructive secrets in that camp. The way to go would be to boot out Kate, Carole and family but again, how to go about it? Billion dollar question. .

Kate was raised with the delusion that she was just as good as the aristos and she wasn't. Like most mothers, Carole taught Kate to punch above her weight. Kate would never have viewed her fellow aspirationalists as equals and quite frankly, William and his set came to uni more experienced and worldly and with much proven stamina (walking behind his mother's coffin in front of billions) than she did. Kate has no real place in William's life and she reminds me of myself before I ended up making better choices. Kate, if there is a divorce, she will end up likely not at all basically adjusting and adapting. The palace will not give her plush accommodations and she will not at all end up being able to spend her time just living a louche life. Diana was different and so many women are stupid if they think that they will get those same terms. Kate was never on any list to get any kind of marital arrangement with William. If the Midds had been humble Berkshire stock, then they would have never made it into William's life.

The Midds have no idea that once the BRF decides to act, they act. They do not pussyfoot around. They will drive Kate out and Kate will not be able to treat William like a normal middle class man. He will unleash his wrath against her publicly and he will not stop until she gets it into her thick hair that William does not want her.
