Queen Alexandra was a lovely young girl, she was daughter of the King of Denmark who was married off to the then Prince of Wales. She loved her children very much, and tended to cling onto them when they were adults. She got on well with Queen Victoria, well, as much as anyone could. Queen Alexandra was the one who started royal charities ,.. Queen Alexandra Order of Nursing, she would send people who sent begging letters envelopes containing £5 notes. She took an interest in John Merrick and was responsible for a charity that was set up for him. She was patron for many hospitals and orphanages. No One had a bad thing to about her. Her husband treated her abysmally, other women, gambling, over eating and drinking to excess. She outlived her husband by 15 years and spent much of her time in Denmark, her sister was the mother of Tsar Nicholas and after the Russian Revolution she lived in Denmark with Alix. Some say she was the Diana of her time . click on this link to see photographs of her. byronsmuse.wordpress.com/2013/12/01/queen-alexandra-life-in-photos/

What I admire about the old-school royals, is that they stayed in their places; they partied on aristocratic estates, they stayed in their own palaces for schooling, and they married their own kind, not someone who is a nobody until they themselves come along. They married other royals and married other aristocrats and basically kept to themselves. The late Queen Mother, for all her faults, didn't play at being a middle class housewife; she accepted the constrictions without complaint and was well compensated for it. Just like how heads of state are compensated for their sacrifices in a great many areas. Princes married princesses; titles married titles and taxpayers didn't have to pay for royals who refuse to marry their own kind. If Princess Anne had wanted to remain a princess, she should have been told to marry a prince of a foreign nation and go there and live in style appropriate to the title. If a prince wanted to remain a prince and live accordingly, they should be marrying princesses. No more marrying a good time bed warmer and quite frankly, I am sick of royals pretending to be 'just everyone else,' and people who are disabled on taxpayer money get ridiculed and viewed as lower than dirt.
Second, consorts were treated better. Prince (and eventually King Edward VII) Edward never allowed his set to ridicule or insult his wife Alexandra. Alexandra was a deaf princess from Denmark and consorts were NEVER disrespected by anyone, ever. It is saying a lot that instead of suffering in silence, men and women marrying the Windsors prefer to divorce. Mark Philips even had a kid out of wedlock and Antony-Armstrong Jones waited until he had real ammunition to go after a divorce from Princess Margaret. Margaret allowed her set to insult Tony, knowing that it hurt Tony not to be able to work and Margaret never knew how degrading it was for a man to be kept. I do not think that HME understood that Philip being insulted all the time over being a kept man in fact hurt like crazy. Back then, Prince Consorts were known to be making huge masculine sacrifices and so were treated with more respect and deference by the public and press. It just was what it was. HME should have protected Philip better in a lot of ways.

I wonder how different the trajectories of British royalty would have been if they had married dethroned royals. Like if Prince Charles had married Princess Olga Romanov, or if Edward VIII had in fact married a former Russian princess or a former French princess or a former Polish princess (and so on and so forth). Catholicism aside, it would connect ties better. If Danish or Swedish or even Norwegian aristocrats had been courted by British royals, it would infuse the lines with real royalty while keeping the biological lines fresh from genetic contamination. Instead of more Germans and Prussians, imagine if a French royal agreed to convert to Protestantism or if a Danish princess married a British Prince. Just for once something that justifies all the pomp and circumstance. Something that brings more solid benefits than just more narcissistic snobbery. The prejudice against Catholics seriously limited the pool of truly eligible candidates, despite the fact that many dethroned lines are far more impressive. By the time Charles was fit for marriage, it can be safely said that no Catholic consort could possibly order the burning of Protestants in London Square or Piccadilly. In fact, by 1800 it could be safely said that a Catholic Consort would in fact be no threat to anyone.
