I also started a thread for Marie Antoinette in the Hapsburg/Austria forum. How about we keep both open and leave this one mainly for her life as Queen of France? We can combine them later, if need be. Admin

Good idea. This thread should be about the Habsburg family in particular.

Truth be told, in my view, Marie Antoinette was a failed Queen; she knew what she was supposed to be doing and she wouldn't engage the public and would not butter up the nobles. A biographer called Stefan Zweig write a FABULOUS biography of her that lays it all out and it is intriguing that despite the NONSTOP warnings from Austria throughout her entire reign, she refused to listen or do anything that would safeguard her reputation.

1. As Dauphine and in her early years as Queen of France, her mother the Empress wrote her constantly about her antics. Marie was frequenting the dance halls and tawdry places where she would irresponsibly dress up in a mask and act in ways that were apparently out of line. Her fashions, blowing 250K on a pair of diamond bracelets, and irreverent behavior towards Louis XVI was scandalous. The dance halls were the old fashioned version of the dance clubs we have today and she was running with a titled, but bad crowd. 2. Her brother visited and stayed for six months and wrote her letters chastising her for being irresponsible.

She was flighty, immature but she was given a bad rap IMO. I have read many books about her over the years, some very old books. Her mother blamed her for not getting pregnant when it was her husband's issue. Her mother was a domineering woman who thought she could rule France through her daughter. Her brother was just as bad. Marie Antoinette never reigned, her husband did. He was stubborn and useless.

Marie Antoinette never reigned, her husband did. He was stubborn and useless. I think the real issue here is that neither he or Marie were equipped to deal with the situation as it unfolded. The only other precedent was the situation involving Charles I and it was wrong to use a precedent to deal with a situation where the dynamics were completely different. Marie however was a woman who basically was in way over her head and the geopolitical situation was in fact way out of control. I wish Marie had not been maltreated by the French courtiers and Marie should have been far better supported in terms of guidance and she should have been able to develop better emotionally and psychologically. The Versailles way of life was dying out and it is clear that Marie herself was increasingly happy as she started to downscale as much as one can at her particular era. The kind of grandeur she was living in was unsustainable and dying out and regrettably Marie ended up losing her life as her era shut down.

I wonder how different her fate would have been if she had taken good advice that she was given. She should have buttered up the nobility and did all she could to help the French people in whatever way she could. If she had done both she would be respected and revered and would have lived a long and respected life, but instead she refused to do her part for the nation and court. Her mother warned her to socialize with the entire nobility and her brother did more outreach during a state visit than Marie Antoinette did her entire reign.
