I didn't expect that news.
Even though the statement by Queen Margarethe did mention her back problems, I am wondering if she has other health problems. However, it could be that she has been persuaded (or pushed) by Fred in order for him to save face.
The Australian media here will go overboard with pushing the 'our Queen Mary.' Although Mary gets left alone for most part when she is holidaying back in Australia this announcement will send the journos into overdrive. The trashy No Idea (New Idea magazine) will be relentless.

I think the Danes will welcome Frederick as King, but if Frederick does not deliver jobs or fresh geopolitical ties, I am certain that there will not be an easy reign for him. Queen Margarethe might be trying to protect him, but if you don't have standing and strong allies, you will end up floundering. If he and his wife Mary do not deliver jobs or anything else, I am certain that any enemies he has will end up taking serious shots. As for that lavish party, it does show that the royals are maladaptive and will not be able to cut back. In fact, they seem to have issues seeing themselves as existing outside of media coverage or making a lavish splash.

There is one thing with Mary that when she is smiling and has a laugh she doesn't overdo it like a certain other Royal with the gawky grin etc.
Mary and Kate have been compared as dressing similarly indicating that one is copying the other. Given that Mary has been with the Danish Royal Family since 2004 and dresses in conservative dresses etc it does seem a stretch to indicate that it would be her copying Kate.
The media here in Australia have been running articles and stories on the news about the events of the Danish royal family since the announcement of the abdication. I expect on the day it happens that there will be a lot of publicity in Australia.

I think Mary is the only modern consort who knows the score and does her part to maintain family harmony. Mary is the only one who does not try to live a 'normal' life and I would not begrudge her her recent ascension to Queen Consort. She handles her husband's infidelity with sophistication, and I honestly think that Mary enjoys luxury, but does not pretend to wish to live a simpler life.
