My grandfather married a German royal princess after my grandmother divorced him (reasons I am not putting on here) and she never liked me. She never did go out of her way to bond with me and a lot of the royals in Germany seem to behave as if they are just waiting out until there is a monarchical restoration. A lot of German nobles consorted with the Nazis and there was a floated possibility to the former kaiser that there would be a monarchical restoration under the aegis of the Nazi regime. Then there is the fact that the German royals keep up the constant pretensions that their royal status should have more (rather than less) involvement. It's not like an elected government is going anywhere and if I were a former legally recognized royal or aristocratic, I would be merrily living up my privileged life and then eventually moving into being helpful to the nation's well being in various areas. Then I would have it ALL; titles, wealth, titanium social connections and fun, and a respected place in government.

I sincerely think that royals among the dethroned are itching to get their former status back. A lot of them are putting up websites and flooding social media and YouTube; it's becoming clear that they want the old grand life back and want to be adored like the reigning royals are. Dethroned royals have the reigning royals there and try to make their weddings a huge deal and it is clear to me that (as far as I can tell) they welcome a movement for a restoration. They say they don't care about a monarchical restoration, but they do and I think government officials know it. It's not a life of service, but a life of luxury funded by taxpayers, i.e., a life like the reigning royalties. I also think there is no point to pretending that German royalty are chill with being dethroned. If they were chill with it, they would NOT have consorted with and married Nazis, they would not have been getting mixed in with the reigning royalties. They would be working, living lives of their own, and they would be steering clear of a lot of things they choose to get embedded in.
Thing is that the Romanovs talk about disputes about the headship of the House of Romanov and it is clear that they refuse to accept that there are no worries about the succession since there is no throne or any kind of dynasty anymore. Same with the Germans, same with the Romanians, same with the Bulgarian and so on and so forth. They are not talking like people who accept that their ancestors made bad choices in leadership and therefore they should be grateful that their ancestors managed to survive. As for my ancestors, I am dominantly Eastern European and my great grandparents had the ability to dodge Bolshevik firing squads and Nazi mobile gas chambers to get to the States so I would have to say I am DEAD GRATEFUL that they were smart enough to do so. Go back to Europe to be part of a reigning dynasty, NO WAY! Dethroned royals are acting like they are public figures and they aren't. The 'custodian' of the Romanian throne accepts flowers and participates in certain ceremonies and it really isn't her place to do so.

I'm sure there are some, of course, but others have moved on and established careers and lives for themselves. Some actively worked against the nazi regime and saw right through them. It seems like it's the English RF (now) that hasn't learned to modernize and simplify their lives, and rely way too much on tax-payer sponsored luxury and deference. My ancestry is eastern-european, northern european, you name it, any european. For one of my royalish links, I can say that both Catherine the Great and I are actually descended from the same woman - she from a first marriage, and yours truly from a 2nd marriage. From Catherine the Great comes the Romanovs, of course (she was solidly German), and my ancestors eventually worked their way across the pond, and here we are. Very lucky that my ancestors came over and settled where they did. I love my country but also do appreciate a lot of those European ways. Their more relaxed lifestyle appeals to me.

When reading about royalty I admit that I love how they live such flexible lives. Hunting, holistic schooling, flexible life/work balance and it did inspire my aspiration to work from home.

What astounds me is how well they were educated: masters, instructors, and experts in all fields Religion, the fine arts, sciences, philosophy, etc. Their palaces became salons for intellectuals and enlightened figures of the day. They didn't scimp on their children's education and upbringing and so were raised to conduct themselves, well, like the royals they were. There were clear definitions between classesthat slowly broke down starting around the end of the French Revolution, and in some places, faster than others. Just doing some research that covers this somewhat, and while there were still the strong class divisions, there were rumblings in the populace as people were starting to understand that things were just not right, even if they couldn't maybe place or have any reference to what they were experiencing. I love the castles, architecture, and sense of history and wish I had a job where I could just have access to all these royal resources and then go to some delightful little on site cafe for lunch. That's totally my scene. There's this awesome feeling that you are stepping back in time that is so surreal. While disappointed and disheartened by certain current royals, the old ones are beyond fascinating. They had such a commitment to their "roles" and sense of duty that is sorely, SORELY lacking today.

Back then the world was harder and the royals saw how hard it was; they couldn't escape it. Henry VIII for all his butchery patronized Memmo, the famous Thomas Tallis, the famous scholar Sir Thomas More, Erasmus and who knows who else. Francois I Valois of France patronized Leonardo DaVinci and Cellini among other legends. They knew that the world was not kind to the uneducated and the ignorant and they knew that bringing in jobs and providing stability/security is bluntly put, something they provided at great personal cost. It was non-negotiable. I do not think there is any point to pretending that any of us want to live a life of insecurity and instability and I am fed up with how royals seem to revel in causing chaos and trouble.
Thing is, that the Affair of the Necklace in France helped articulate in the minds of the French nation what was wrong. The outright murder of Rasputin crystallized the discontent of the Russians towards the Romanovs and then there was the massacre of those marchers that wanted to petition the Tsar. Triggers are always there, but once they are pulled, the general population finally has a clarification as to 'why' things are as messed up as they are. The German royals reigned and it was clear that they were not doing an entirely good job and it wasn't until after WWI that the German royals (along with the Austrians) were removed and admittedly the Germans and Austrians were responsible for WWI and so both dynasties were given the choice to walk with their lives and fortunes, or get gunned down like the Romanovs. Smartly the Germans and Austrians took the deal and walked, but I wonder if the most recent generation is aware that their self promotion can be considered a real threat.
As of now the Windsors and rest of the reigning dynasties are either clueless, or are aware, but are not smart enough to make the right moves to defuse a rapidly escalating situation that will reach a breaking point. Realistically, there will be a clash and politicians will bear their teeth and I will enjoy watching this Gotterdammerung go down and kick arse. I do not see royals adapting and making a contribution and I do not see how politicians can cope with this mess of a situation and get the royals under control.
