I think before Victorian idealism, royal marriages lasted longer mainly because everyone knew the score of the situation. Men married consorts for diplomatic/trade ties and in exchange for an admittedly difficult life, consorts got lifetime marital security, public respect, a position that was inviolable, and consorts would NEVER be able to be overthrown by mistresses. Since royals do not use their brains or be honest about their genuine wishes, royals refuse to see that they need to marry for certain types of protection that only a well connected, well behaved spouse can bring. There is a reason that JFK married Jackie and not Marilyn. These days it isn't hard to find a decent spouse if you are in fact in a profession, but regrettably princes are not raised these days to make something of themselves. They hit the trrashy clubs scene, had great sex, and mistakenly thought it was true love and this was who they wanted to marry.

From a member's only section. Just had to share:
Had a friend round for coffee and she used to ski regularly in Verbier where Fergie worked back in the day. She said Fergie had the most awful reputation as the bike of Verbier. Her partner knew Camilla and ex husband and said that Camilla’s nick name was ‘park and ride’ not Parker-Bowles!!

These days only tarts get rings. Thanks to Camilla, being well behaved means that you miss out on the fun and nurturing aspects of marriage and I am fed up to the gills with it. Look at the history of women who get rings from princes.

Revenge against an establishment that rightly did not respect Alice Keppel or approve of Camilla. What I find intriguing is how Camilla and Alice refused to accept that it wasn't just sex, but rank that barred Alice from marrying Edward. Most men do not want to marry 'one of the gang' and it is clear that Alice and Camilla refused to accept that they did not have the way of proving themselves in the area that the BRF needs, that any prominent family needs. Camilla wants to hurt and establishment that rightly didn't believe she had what it took and Camilla would not refuse the advances of a man who she knew would never marry her. Then after the marriage Camilla suddenly didn't want to be left behind and she latched on and never let go. I don't think Charles bedded Diana before they were married mainly since his family would not have allowed it and I am certain that Charles in his own way (the way of most men) had far more respect for Diana. If someone had sat Diana down and explained male psychology to her, Diana would have been better able to understand all those processes. Second, Camilla is in her own way tearing a way of life apart all due to her low self esteem.
