I think there should be a bigger reason for the abdication than a stylish, upper class American behaving in a healthily assertive way. Neither HMQM or the Duke were unused to mistresses hostessing events and second, that kind of rudeness is in fact (brushing past the hostess and ignoring the greeting) out of line and if Edward VIII wanted her to hostess, then Wallis was the rightful hostess.

The rudeness of the Queen Mother was definitely out of line. I think the QM had her sights on Edward rather than Bertie so I wonder whether it was not only her arrogance but jealousy. I think there definitely was a bigger reason for the abdication than Wallis. I consider Wallis was used as the scapegoat. David/Edward I don't think he wanted to be King and didn't have the dedication for duty. Wasn't there some members of Parliament who didn't want David/Edward on the throne?

Edward VIII abdicated because the holdovers from the reign of Edward VII did all they could to undermine him and thwart any attempts to make rightful changes to Victorian customs that needed to die out. As for HMQM, she did want Edward VIII for herself. She spent an entire century making him miserable by trashing his reputation beyond anything that was normal or natural. As for suitability, Wallis was suitable; she would have brought the American upper class with her and the American upper class is not ornamental. Of course, members of Parliament were often too stupid to appreciate that a young attractive King with a sophisticated, worldly Queen would in fact be PERFECT for cultivating needed international connections. No one owned a nobody from Glamis castle anything and Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra are largely to blame since it was them that wanted Lady Elizabeth for the Duke of York. The late Queen Mother in fact had wanted to marry a man named Jamie Stuart, but that was thwarted. So go figure, Queen Mary and Alexandra were instrumental in the accompanying mess. Amazing how dumb these women were, not seeing how a King would be overthrown by their own choice.
The main 'problem' was that Wallis was American and go figure, it has been Americans that in fact paid for aristocrats to keep money to keep those estates going.

Wallis had class in an American way that is often more substantial than European culture.

I wish Wallis had renounced the status after Edward died and she could have lived out her life in the States. As for being avaricious, Wallis was no different than any of us who know the difference between the good life and the hard life. As for luxury, the BRF is worse since they leech off of taxpayers.

I resent this. Any woman with any brains and stamina does not go for a man without making sure he is a solid provider and a stable personality. In her era, women HAD to think of money and status first instead of just the heart. In fact, even the Queen Mother was likely just the same although she was too much of a hypocrite to admit it. Then there is the fact that Wallis was not some nobody from nowhere, she was a member of the American upper class even if her family treated her like dirt.
