The Queen Mother is the reason that royal families have been failing for a long time. People of the world shouldn't marry people who come from more sheltered backgrounds. Edward VIII, had he married Wallis, would have ended up attaching the UK to the American Establishment and the American Establishment is where the realities of power are, not just ceremonial as in the UK. There is no way that the US would have been needed to be wooed into an active alliance, the minute Hitler attacked Poland, the US would have started fighting with the UK or would have at least helped before the Blitz. Wallis was a woman of the world and they are often the best for men of the world. Diana was a lot like the Queen Mother, thought very highly of her mediocre family background and regrettably was overthrown by a mistress. The Queen Mother held both her daughters back academically, was out of control in the area of her role when her daughter stepped up as monarch, and should have attacked Camilla instead of attacking Diana. The Queen Mother also would NOT LET UP on Edward VIII or Wallis even after she stepped up and she also never let up after each died. If Bertie had married someone far more sophisticated, he would have ended up better off and maybe Edward VIII would have ended up reigning and marrying Wallis and the monarchy would have been a million times better off and so would the nation.
Leaders can't be small town types, it never works out. All our leaders are people of experience and proven stamina and I am certain that had Bertie married a more sophisticated type, there wouldn't have been all that upheaval. There is also no way that the Windsors would be as stupid as they are now. Edward VIII and Wallis would have had smarter children and would have likely instilled street smarts that all leaders have to have. Then there is the fact that the kids wouldn't be controlled by people like Camilla and would not have been easily pushed around like Charles. Thing is, that equals should marry equals, not Cinderellas or other dependents. The Queen Mother got drunk on power and like most sheltered types, couldn't handle it responsibly. Then there is the fact that neither Diana or the Queen Mother sought to improve themselves intellectually and it is likely that Diana wouldn't have married Charles and might have lived a long life filled with family and who knows what else. The Queen Mother would have lived a life of obscurity, which is all she was good for.

More on Cookie's hidden relatives - what a sad ending. This was the worst of it. Her disabled relations were no threat to her and it is clear that that family didn't care if they lived in poverty while the BRF lived in splendor. I honestly hope I am able to just see the end of this rotten monarchy and I admire "The Crown" for pointing out how wealthy the family lived while the disabled family lived luxuriously. One other worst factor is how the Queen Mother failed to support her daughter by taking a step back and instead the Queen Mother insisted on being the center of it all and holding her daughters back. I sometimes wonder if she is a huge reason that neither daughter married sensibly. Imagine having to make a MIL happy instead of the wife and having a MIL who refuses to back off. The Queen Mother undermined Prince Philip all the time and didn't encourage HME to make Philip a more prominent partner in the monarchy (red boxes) and is it any wonder that Margaret struggled? I honestly think what made all this worse is how she really did behave as if she were part of the BRF by some sacred right and not dumb luck. Second, Alexandra and Mary should never have undermined Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon from marrying Jamie Stuart. It would have prevented an abdication and prevented a Spencer from marrying in. Her main influence was encouraging her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren to think only of themselves; Charles might have had a shot at marrying someone with more worldly sophistication if he had just been raised and influenced by anyone other than Lord Mountbatten and HMEQM and I am certain that there really is no point to pretending that a member of the royal family was well served by Diana. Imagine if Charles had married someone with an actual intellect and if he had married someone OUTSIDE of the inward-looking aristocracy and gentry. "Our own kind" is rather undermined when it is defining people who are limited in terms of interest, upbringing, and of course, long term focus. The Queen Mother was unable to see Camilla as a threat since she herself had never faced the loss of her husband to another woman. She never had to deal with out-of-control mistresses. Throw in the chronic hypocrisy and it's no wonder no one decent wants anything to do with them.

I really wish our society would grow up out of this ingenue BS and I am sick and tired of types like Kate and Mette-Marit getting rings and status and respect. I will love nothing more than seeing this rotten dynasty fall into a pit. The Queen Mother made sure that her daughter who was Queen would remain subjugated to her and as a result, HME was weak when she should have been tough and tough where she should have been benign.
