Shouldn't be a surprise. After all, he has done NOTHING for his people who have given him everything. It's not like he is someone who wrote hefty checks to the government to be given to the people and it's not like they (the royals) have done anything other than partied and sipped champagne while gobbling caviar. They have done nothing, they literally seem unable to comprehend that they are completely disconnected from the economic reality of the situation of their people. The politicians are scrambling for solutions while the diplomats scramble to maintain geopolitical stability and these morons yuk it up in expensive finery and haute cuisine. I mean really, why do the royals get the palaces and jewels and deference?

Why wouldn't they? They are snug and secure and adulated while their people continue to pay up despite not really having any money left to give.

Good for them but sad for the Dutch people

I read about stuff like the historical revolutions, but I understand now WHY they happened. The Romanovs and Bourbons were not at all doing anything and were of no help to their desperate people. Clearly the Dutch RF (*among all the others) are either too stupid or just too weak to do anything of substantial help.

www.celebitchy.com/719661/dutch_princess_catharina-amalia_will_turn_down_her_2_million_annual_allowance/Aside: Wow, somebody sure wants some attention for doing...well, nothing?Dutch Princess Catharina-Amalia will turn down her $2 million ‘annual allowance’ June 16, 2021 By Kaiser Princess Catharina-Amalia, Royals Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, heir to the Dutch throne, is waiving her right to a hefty annual allowance. The eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima sent a hand-written letter to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Friday, informing him of her decision to turn down her nearly $2 million allowance until she takes up royal duties.
“On 7 December 2021 I will be 18 and, according to the law, receive an allowance,” Princess Amalia said in a letter published by Dutch public NOS. “I find that uncomfortable as long as I do not do anything for it in return, and while other students have a much tougher time of it, particularly in this period of coronavirus.”
Amalia added that she intended to take a gap year before starting her undergraduate studies. She said she would repay the nearly $400,000 she was entitled to during her time as a student and would not claim $1.6 million in expenses “until I incur high costs in my role as Princess of Orange.”
Princess Amalia passed her final exams at the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague last week, graduating cum laude. In keeping with Dutch tradition, she raised the country’s flag along with her backpack in a video shared to the family’s social media accounts. “I just got a call with the news that I passed!” she said. “I want to congratulate all other graduates and wish other students good luck with any resits in the second period.”[From People]

Some comments:
Jezz says: June 16, 2021 at 7:40 am This girl is brilliant! (And gorg!) More stories about her!
Reply L84Tea says: June 16, 2021 at 8:23 am I adore the Dutch RF and wish they were covered more, if for nothing else, the fashion! Maxima is such a gracious and dazzling Queen and seems like a lot of fun. It says a lot that you can tell that that whole group of European and Scandinavian royals–Maxima, Mary, Victoria, Mathilde, Mette-Marit–all seem to get along very well and seem like good friends with one another. The Dutch royals have a had one or two tone-deaf scandals (like trying to take off for a skiing trip during the height of the pandemic), but other than that they at least haven’t driven any in-laws out of their country. Yeah, tossing Argentinians out of planes and human beings going missing and their families never knowing what happened to them pales in comparison. You are so right, poor Meghan.
Reply ArtHistorian says: June 16, 2021 at 8:46 am There are very very strong familial ties between the Scandinavian royals. The Danish Queen and the Swedish King are literally first cousins – but there’s a history of intermarriage between the three Scandi RF’s as well as very close friendships. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is very close to Queen Sonja of Norway. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden regards Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark as a kind of surrogate brother. The CP couples of Denmark, Sweden and Norway are all good friends. The King of the Netherlands is the godson of the Danish Queen – and the Dutch king and Queen see the Danish CP couple privately. Furthermore, it was revealed at Margrethe’s 80-birthday that most of the younger European royals (including the kings of Holland and Spain) calls her Aunt Daisy (they all made video congratulations because the festivities were cancelled due to Corona). A former high-placed employee of QMII also revealed that several younger European royals approach Margrethe for advice on things. I'm actually distantly related to them all, apparently, but ask Kaiser why all my comments get banned and/or censored. tsk tsk tsk
In short, all the European royals are related by varying degrees of closeness – and they see each other regularly, both in private and for official occasions. The only ones who don’t really participate in these social relationships are the British royals, especially the younger generations (Charles’ generation and his children).
There’s a recent Scandinavian tv-show called Atlantic Crossing which is about the Norwegian RF during WWII – but it actually really conveys the fact that all the European RFs are related in terms of family. It is actually pretty good though heavy fictionalized. It has Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, British and American actors in it (Kyle McLachnan plays Roosevelt) and both Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and English are spoken. Sadly, I don’t know if it is available with English subtexts.
L84Tea says: June 16, 2021 at 8:59 am Wow, thank you for all that great info! Yes, it’s very obvious they are all close. It’s actually nice to see in Royal watching. Yes, they’re all over-privileged and live in a bubble, but that’s royals for you.

This is nothing. With the personal accounts of the Dutch RF, there is no reason for her to get anything and that family should be more self sufficient; this is just a gesture, nothing substantial. A much better announcement would be that the Dutch RF are giving out money to keep their people out of the gutter and well fed.

We should all be so lucky to give up a 2 million allowance when we reach 18. Nice gesture but doesnt really change things.

But this is such a nothing gesture. Her family is worth billions, hundreds of millions come in each year. She will get that allowance once she assumes duties as heir and I am certain that she will not want for anything. I think a huge reason she isn't doing duties is because usual appearances will not help in any way and for all we know, the mood might be very hostile against the royals.
