Oh how nice, another puff piece about her luxurious lifestyle; how is this helping keep the Dutch people feeling safe/secure about their worries about food/income during these terrible times? I fully understand why Communism took off in Russia and why there were revolutions in France. If there were an article about how Maxima secured income for Dutch citizens to get through the pandemic with no money worries, that would be worth a glowing article. If there were an article about the Dutch people being made free from food insecurity due to several trade deals sealed by the Dutch king with the assistance of the Princess of Orange, that would be worth a glowing article. Yet despite their resources and vaunted top level educations/training, it is clear that they have no done any of this.

Guessing this is what happens when a wannabe with zero concept of public service marries into royalty, and not with a gracious, intelligent and educated man known for his selflessness. To the manor born.

You know, I do NOT begrudge anyone a good life (despite my issues, I have had HUGE advantages), but I ask that they own it. Maxima was not a top flight financier and she was not someone who belonged at economic conferences and was not someone who belonged chatting with heads of state on a regular basis. She was rich, well connected, but she was NOT well raised; of course, with a father like hers, how else could she have turned out?

Neither do I - yes, own it. Stop acting like you are the grand lady of the manor condescending to the unwashed masses. People don't need or deserve your condescension. Maxima. With your family background: with what your family supported in Angentina, you are hardly one to pretend you are on the side of the "people". The news of Prince Willem-Alexander's relationship and eventual marriage plans to Máxima Zorreguieta caused controversy in the Netherlands.[5] Máxima's father had been the Minister of Agriculture during the regime of former Argentine President Videla,[5] a military dictator who ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1981 and who was responsible for many atrocities against civilians (An estimated 10,000–30,000 people were kidnapped and murdered during this and subsequent military regimes before democracy was restored to Argentina in 1983). Jorge Zorreguieta had resigned one year before the end of the Videla regime and claimed that, as a civilian, he was unaware of the Dirty War while he was a cabinet minister.[5] Professor Michiel Baud [nl], who on request of the Dutch Parliament carried out an inquiry on the involvement of Zorreguieta, concluded that it would have been unlikely for a person in such a powerful position in the government to be unaware of the Dirty War.[7] Despite finding Zorreguieta to be at fault, the marriage between his daughter Máxima and Prince Willem-Alexander was approved by parliament because Máxima herself had not done anything wrong; however Jorge Zorreguieta was not allowed to attend the 2002 wedding. Parliament's approval was necessary for Willem-Alexander to stay in line to the Dutch throne.Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Zorreguieta

Aside: To not lose sight of victims and those who don't have a bright future mapped out for them due to an accident of birth or what Willem/Maxima cannot truly pass over/ignore. www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/apr/05/rugby-argentina-dirty-war-la-plata-1978-world-cupRugby's victims of Argentina's dirty war show sport cannot evade politics A new novel, The Silenced, tells the story of the La Plata squad wiped out in the years building up to football’s 1978 World Cup Dozens of sports books land on my desk every year. Few, though, have ever packed the gut punch of The Silenced, an extraordinary story that was finally published in English last week. It tells the shocking true tale of what happened when one of the finest rugby teams in Argentina defied the state. Anyone who still believes the dastardly deceit that sport and politics shouldn’t mix should read it – and hastily repent.
It begins with an interview with Raúl Barandiarán, the sole survivor of the original La Plata 1st XV rugby squad from 1975. Every one of his 20 teammates, the Italian author Claudio Fava writes, were murdered: “gunned down, assassinated, ‘disappeared’, in an attempt to tear a generation – an entire squad – out by its roots”.
The IOC president, Thomas Bach, said Olympic boycotts have never achieved anything. IOC under fire after ‘dismissing’ claims of genocide against Uighurs in China Read more This was no ordinary squad. La Plata, based in a coastal suburb of Buenos Aires, were one of the leading clubs in Argentina. “They were a good group of guys,” Barandiarán says. “The best – we were unbeatable at sevens. But we never got called up to the national side. Rugby is a right-wing sport in Argentina, and we were on the left.” And being on the left during the “dirty war” in the 70s and early 80s, when 30,000 people suspected of opposing the government were tortured, killed or disappeared, was a dangerous place to be.... The silence turned the spotlight on the team’s squad, many of whom belonged to communist groups. And after 1976, when General Jorge Rafael Videla took over, things got even worse.
Three of the team – Otilio Pascua, Pablo Barut and Santiago Sánchez Viamonte – were kidnapped together. A month later, the body of Pascua, an architecture student and Communist party member, was discovered. “His body was found floating in the Rio de la Plata, bloated beyond recognition by the water, arms bound tightly, hands chopped off, a bullet in the head,” says Barandiarán. Like thousands of others Pascua had been thrown out of an aeroplane. But 15 of the 20 from La Plata who disappeared have never been accounted for.

Aside: Sorry to go on some kind of morbid tangent right now, but I cannot believe these kind of stories are not front and centre in the press of the Netherlands. Very tragic and heart-breaking stories. Why celebrate the offspring and descendants of war criminals, but forget about the murderers of so many innocents? www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2021/01/daniel-loedel-finding-my-sisters-remains/617701/MY SISTER WAS DISAPPEARED 43 YEARS AGO A casualty of Argentina’s so-called Dirty War, Isabel haunted my childhood like a ghost. Then I started searching for her.
By Daniel Loedel JANUARY 17, 2021 SHARE .The ones of the bones punctured by bullets—her rib, her pelvis, her humerus—did not move me as much as those of her skull. It was so old-looking, like one of those prehistoric craniums of Homo sapiens, the nose bashed in, some of the teeth missing, that earthen coloring. The skull had lain in a common grave, untouched for more than 30 years, before being taken to a lab, where it remained officially unidentified for about another 10. The sight of it destroyed me. In all the photos I had seen, Isabel looked incredibly young, with a cherubic beauty—round cheeks, light hair, searching blue eyes. She had been murdered and disappeared by the military dictatorship in Argentina in January 1978, when she was just 22. Staring at those photos of her skeleton in March 2018, I was eight years older than she ever had been. Never before had I quite grasped how much time she hadn’t gotten to live, to age and grow old, until I saw her bones, and realized they had been aging without the rest of her.

I have no idea; thing is, that no one for a long time has been willing to set standards and face ugly realities. Maxima is the daughter of a man who was instrumental in the destruction of thousands of lives and it is clear that the -tale narrative is preferred over hard truths. If Maxima wanted to marry an American politician, she would not have been tolerated or accepted and would have been dumped rather than married.

When/if this pandemic ends and the dust settles, people are going to tally up and realize that royals did nothing of help or value to help their people or anyone else. Politicians will also show resentment and it will be intriguing to see if whether or not royals retain their privileges and current prerogatives. I sincerely hope politicians set these people straight and put a stop to their airy BS. No one will want to hear about their latest inspirations and mostly I believe people will want to live quietly, heal, and also just be taken care of instead of being asked for more by royals who already have too much.

Great chat, everybody, but let's keep it to Willem, Maxima and family, here.
We have some many threads now, but do we need a new one for discussion of monarchial systems? The ones that work and the ones that don't anymore? Pros and cons? Who has stepped up and who hasn't?
hmmmm.....

Maxima has failed as Queen Consort and it is clear that Willem is a moron; the princesses have yet to show stamina and so far neither king or queen have done a single thing to help. I find it mystifying that with the pandemic still raging, the Princess of Orange wants to go to regular school despite the benefits of palace tutoring.

Maybe she wants to break away from the royal life and try to be reasonably normal? I honestly don't know a lot about them so it's just guessing on my part.

More playing at being normal while at school. What IS IT with royals these days that they keep using uni as a playground to play out their normalcy fantasies?

Sorry for the double post, but I am really fed up with how royals are setting an example that university is a place where playtime for them is allowed. William went to uni and ruined his life from thereon and it is clear that there is no chance of a 'normal' life so it is clear that this is just playtime for them. William got exposed to a much more seemingly easy way of life and hasn't grown out of it and it is clear that with this pandemic still going on, the royals refuse to accept that this is not the time for playtime. Amalia is just going to be a disruptive presence (security/other arrangements) and they don't belong there, there is no real place for them. They'll never fit and they'll never belong among kids who are there to educate and get training for a concrete profession. Her profession is now fully mapped out and she has no need to learn on campus, she already has limitless resources to get the best education that the world can provide and it is clear that this is all just some silly joke to her. If she wants to break away from palace life, she should go work and live in a foreign country and get her education online and from the best tutors that her family's billions can provide. She does not belong on a university campus, she does not belong in university. Playing at being one of the plebs is a HUGE slap in the face considering that a lot of them are living in frightening times and she chooses not to do anything for any of them and it is clear that she could if she wanted. She could easily snap her fingers and the best tutors in the world would gladly teach her and she could get trade and income brought to her people. Playing at being a regular student in a local coffee shop is an insult to the real thing and it is clear that she isn't facing certain hard facts about her position. At eighteen, she (like Prince William) should be taking on more, not taking on less. She's a legal adult and a future Sovereign and oddly, she is still determined to skive off and shirk her responsibilities. This would be a PERFECT chance for her to step up and drop the BS and yet she refuses. The money paying her tuition isn't even her money, it's taxpayer money. It's not her money to play around on. Everything she and her family has comes from someone else and it's time she started giving back!
