Sweet dream: Kate Middleton is hoping to taste success with her cake venture

Stung by criticism that she doesn’t have a full-time job – and fed up with the nickname ‘Waity Katie’ – Kate Middleton has been working on secret plans to start a new business with her brother, James.

They want to open a posh cake shop on the King's Road in Chelsea and Kate, 28, long-term girlfriend of Prince William, has been checking out the opposition and looking for the perfect location.

‘Kate has been doing some research for James and just before Christmas she went to the Love Bakery on the Kings Road, where she ordered one of every cake,’ says my source.

‘She joked she was trying out the competition, which actually, she was.

‘James thinks there’s a market for an upmarket cake shop which also sells all the bits and bobs you need to make cakes at homes.

‘Kate’s been helping him with market research and they are hoping to make an announcement this summer – although she’s keen not to be front-of-house,’ says the source.

Kate currently works with her parents, whose online company Party Pieces is run from their home in Berkshire.

James, 22, hopes the new shop will help to develop his company, called Cake Kit, which is tied in with Party Pieces.

Kate spent much of last year photographing the Party Pieces website’s products and overseeing new stock, but friends say she wants to spend more time in London while William is away training at RAF Anglesey.

Says a chum: ‘Kate is bored with Berkshire and her brother is a party lover so they will be thrilled to be in London. But she knows it won’t do if she’s photographed at nightclubs.

'She doesn’t trust anyone outside her family and is very close with James, so this is the perfect solution.’

At least William will have no worries about a wedding cake if and when they eventually tie the knot.

Meanwhile. romance will not be a priority when Princess Eugenie and her new boyfriend Otto Brockway celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow night.

Budding film-maker Otto, 24, nephew of Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, is treating Eugenie, 19, to dinner followed by... a movie.

'Otto isn’t into all that soppy stuff, he just wants to chill and watch a movie with her at his flat,’ says a chum.

‘They just wanted to spend the weekend relaxing, recovering and chilling out.’

Newcastle University student Eugenie has been trying to keep their relationship under wraps in case Otto’s liberal views on cannabis set alarm bells ringing.

Chelsy Davy: Clocking up the air miles... and the charity donations

Chelsy Davy has been raising money for boyfriend Prince Harry’s charity Sentebale while travelling the world before taking up her position as a trainee solicitor.

The 24-year-old, right, teamed up with her brother Shaun to collect cash for the charity, which saves the lives of children in the African kingdom of Lesotho.

‘Chelsy, Shaun and some of his friends helped raise funds for Sentebale in Durban,’ a source said. ‘Chelsy is deeply moved by the work Harry does in Southern Africa.’

Chelsy is also involved with the charity Children In Crisis and her ambition is to set up an orphanage in South Africa.

‘She visited children’s homes with friends and was told off for taking sweets as it’s not good for the kids,’ the source said.

They have not always been the best of friends – but Chelsy Davy and Kate Middleton could be teaming up for the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Chelsy, 24, has invited her to Cape Town for the football festival that starts next month.

Chelsy is planning to stay at the beachside apartment she shares with her brother Shaun – and believes Kate, 28, would have a great time if she could make it too.

Prince Harry’s Zimbabwean-born girlfriend has told friends she will be hosting parties after all the big games and she is hoping Harry and Prince William will also join her.

Harry, 25, will already be in the country as part of a week-long official tour with William, 27. They will go to Botswana to the Tusk Conservation Charity and Lesotho to see the work of Harry’s charity, Sentebale.

Then the Royal brothers will move on to Cape Town to watch England play Algeria on June 18. ‘Chelsy is planning lots of parties and has invited William and Harry to join her although she knows they will be very busy,’ says my source. ‘She has also asked Kate if she wants to come to Cape Town and she hopes Kate can make it. She is hoping to turn it into one big party. Kate has yet to make her mind up but was grateful to receive the invite.’

If Kate is in South Africa at the same time as William it will fuel speculation they are about to announce an engagement.

Harry is also planning an ‘African adventure’ with Chelsy now he has graduated as an Army helicopter pilot.

He is on leave until he starts his Apache training course in late summer and a friend says: ‘He and Chelsy are talking about going to Botswana, possibly Kenya or maybe even taking in Mauritius.’

Prince Harry played the perfect gent when he bumped into his ex-girlfriend Caroline Flack at the Audi polo lunch at Ascot. TV presenter Caroline, 29, was with another ex – Luke Pritchard from rock band The Kooks – and had to introduce him to Harry.

‘Caroline had a fleeting romance with Luke last year while she was also dating his best pal, Dave Danger of The Holloways. After that she dated Harry,’ a source said.

‘It was a bit awkward for Caroline to have to introduce two former flames to one another but Harry likes The Kooks so he seemed happy to meet Luke.’

He was the black sheep of the Middleton family, but Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith has been welcomed back into the fold.

Exactly one year ago,Ibiza-based Gary was in the doghouse for supplying drugs and setting up prostitutes.

But after he bombarded Kate’s mother Carole with countless apologies he was forgiven and invited to dinner at the family’s Berkshire home.

‘Gary is Carole’s younger brother and they have always been very close. She used to take him under her wing when they were youngsters and she loves him dearly,’ says a friend.

‘She couldn’t bring herself to speak with him for several months because of the damage he caused to Kate and Prince William’s relationship.

But she gave in two weeks ago and invited Gary for dinner.’

They have agreed that Gary, 45, will keep his distance to save Kate even more embarrassment.

‘He loves his niece and wants her to be happy so he will keep away – although they have spoken on the telephone,’ adds the source.

Kate and William holidayed at Gary’s dubiously named Ibiza villa, La Maison de Bang Bang, in 2006.

But I’m assured neither she nor William will be returning there soon.

Award-winning fashion designer Georgina Chapman may be in the running to create Kate Middleton’s royal wedding dress.

The 34-year-old previously designed Coleen Rooney’s £100,000 wedding dress, and her Marchesa label, a favourite of A-listers including Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz, already has Royal fans in Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

‘It makes sense as Georgina is British and went to Marlborough, the same school as Kate,’ says my source. ‘The dresses are stunning yet simple.’

Other designers in the running include Bruce Oldfield, who created gowns for Princess Diana, Brazilian label Issa and Chelsea dressmaker Philippa Lepley.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following their royal wedding next year – just like Princess Diana and Prince Charles did 30 years earlier.

And when they do, they are certain to face pressure to share a kiss from the hundreds of thousands of well-wishers expected to line The Mall.

The scenes will echo those seen on July 29, 1981 when the newly married Prince and Princess of Wales sparked deafening applause when they broke with Royal protocol and kissed on the famous balcony.

The Mail on Sunday has been told that courtiers are working on an 11.30am ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, to be followed by a traditional wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

But before that, the Royal couple will appear on the balcony to acknowledge the crowds.

Palace sources say the Queen is keen for the couple to make the appearance as the wedding is being treated as a semi-State occasion, while courtiers believe it will complete the wedding day and fuel a surge in popularity for the Royal Family.

The balcony has been used for Royal appearances since 1851, when Queen Victoria stepped on to it during celebrations for the Great Exhibition. The Royal family traditionally appear there for the RAF fly-past at the end of Trooping The Colour.

In 1973, Princess Anne became the first of the Queen’s children to appear on the balcony with her new spouse, Captain Mark Phillips.

However it was Charles and Diana who shared the most memorable moment on the balcony.

At the time, Charles said to Diana: ‘I am not going to do that caper. They are trying to get us to kiss.’ To which his new wife responded; ‘Well how about it?’ After a moment’s deliberation Charles replied: ‘Why ever not?’ and embraced his bride.

Prince Andrew and the Duchess of York kissed on the balcony following their wedding in 1986, but Edward chose not to kiss Sophie Wessex on their 1999 wedding day.

Buckingham Palace had been kept in the dark over William’s plans until last week. But now the Queen’s aides are being consulted over the wedding breakfast and reception, as well as the traditional ball to be held at the Palace two days before the big day.

‘The Queen loves a wedding and she sees this as a celebration for everyone to enjoy,’ said a Palace source. ‘She wants to be involved and thinks a wedding breakfast and a balcony appearance will both be appropriate.

‘Ultimately it is up to the couple. They have made it clear they want to do things their own way, but the Queen is hoping and expecting that tradition will also be very much a part of the day.’

No invitations have gone out yet but William and Kate – who wants to be known as Catherine now she is a Royal bride-to-be – spent much of last week drawing up guest lists and discussing potential table plans and flower arrangements.

‘They are over the moon and as excited about their wedding day as any couple,’ an aide said. ‘They are looking at everything themselves.’

Charles had hoped that his former valet Michael Fawcett, who oversaw his wedding to Camilla and now runs a party planning business, would be involved with the event but William is said not to get along with him.

‘William has chosen his own private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton to oversee everything,’ says a source.

‘At the moment Fawcett isn’t getting a look-in. William has a team of four at St James’s and they are running everything. William wants it contained because he doesn’t want any leaks. He and Kate want to be in control of everything.’

Aides say plans are already being made to divide Prince William and Prince Harry’s combined household after the wedding so William and Kate have their own private office.

When asked about the time of the wedding and whether the couple planned to make an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, a spokesman for St James’s Palace said: ‘No decision has yet been made about any of these details.’


Team Wedding: SAS man and woman who helped out after Diana’s death

The wedding is being planned by a tight-knit group of William’s most trusted aides, including a Sandhurst-educated SAS officer and a member of the Asprey jewellery family.

Chief planner is Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, who has proved a strong ally of both William and Harry since his appointment as their part-time Private Secretary in 2005.

The 50-year-old former special forces officer is actually a distant relative of William’s, as both are descended from William Ponsonby, 1st Viscount Duncannon, who died in 1793.

His professional relationship with the Royal Family began in 1986, when he was equerry to the late Queen Mother at Clarence House.

After completing his Sandhurst training in 1979, he joined the Irish Guards, but was attached to the SAS for a decade.

In 1989, Margaret Thatcher hand-picked him to lead two major SAS counter-narcotics operations in Colombia, where he trained police in surveillance methods to thwart the country’s influential drug lords.

His tenacity was recognised by the Queen, who awarded him an MBE in 1990. During the First Gulf War, he was a liaison officer with US special forces, and after serving as an SAS troop commander, he was promoted to Major in 1992.

Lowther-Pinkerton was part of a specialist, and originally covert, SAS operation in Bosnia in 1994.

He retired in 1998 but maintained an unofficial role as an adviser to the Government on Balkan issues.

In 2001 he established Objective, a training company advising young travellers about the risks of ‘extreme danger’ zones.

Tipped to become Director of Special Forces, Lowther-Pinkerton instead returned to the Royal household in March 2005 when the Prince of Wales interviewed him for the job of Private Secretary.

Lowther-Pinkerton lives in Suffolk with his wife of 15 years, Susannah Richards, and their four children.

He is assisted in the wedding planning by Helen Asprey, an elegant member of the Royal jewellery family, who has been William and Harry’s personal assistant since 2000.

Before that she worked at Buckingham Palace, mainly in the Duke of Edinburgh’s office. She has known William and Harry since they were small and although little known, she played a maternal role in the young Princes’ lives.

When the Princess of Wales died Harry would often spend weekends with Helen and her husband Nigel Hawkins, who runs a commercial property business.

Ms Asprey is one of the few people the Princes trust to respond to their personal mail and she also co-ordinates their private diaries, oversees their shooting weekends and books their holidays.

The Palace think it is important that Kate Middleton has access to a female aide, and it was Asprey who accompanied her on her visit to Westminster Abbey this month.

The planning team is completed by public relations chief Miguel Head and Assistant Private Secretary Chris Kealey.

Mr Head, a 32-year-old former Ministry of Defence Press Officer is seen as typical of the less stuffy breed of new Royal advisers, while Mr Kealey is a career diplomat on secondment from the Foreign Office, now tasked with overseeing William’s foreign tours.

Philanthropist: Anne Lupton


A wealthy heiress who lived with another woman among the artists of bohemian Chelsea could have played a vital part in the shaping of a future Queen.

Early feminist Anne Lupton was Kate Middleton’s great-aunt, and set up a trust for the education of her descendants.

It is not known if Kate benefited directly from this legacy, but it may explain how her parents afforded the £29,000-a-year fees to educate her at Marlborough College.

Miss Lupton was a free-spirited figure even among the avant-garde residents of Old Chelsea, where she lived from the Twenties until her death in 1967.

She shared a house in Mallord Street, now worth £4 million, with another forward-thinking spinster, Enid Moberly-Bell. Artistic neighbours included A. A. Milne, Gracie Fields and Augustus John – a flamboyant portraitist known for his sexual appetite.

Miss Lupton was an advocate of women’s liberation long before the term was first coined, as was her companion, the Egyptian-born daughter of a former managing director of The Times, Charles Frederick Moberly-Bell.

Miss Moberly-Bell was the headmistress of Lady Margaret School for Girls in nearby Parsons Green, and Miss Lupton was one of the school’s major benefactors.

As well as a biography of her father, Miss Moberly-Bell also wrote books about Victorian feminist Josephine Butler, who was concerned with the welfare of prostitutes, social reformer Octavia Hill, and ‘the rise of the woman doctor’.

It is unclear if Miss Lupton pursued a career. Both women travelled widely, in South America and Canada in particular.

Retired barrister James Buxton, Miss Moberly-Bell’s great-nephew, recalls visiting Mallord Street as a child. ‘Enid and Anne were august figures, both very industrious,’ he said. ‘They were great friends. They were ahead of their time.’

When she arrived in Chelsea in her late 20s, Miss Lupton was already a rich woman, the granddaughter of cloth merchant Frank Lupton. In 1884, he left £64,650 – the equivalent of £33 million today – to his four sons. One of them was Francis – the father of Anne, her sister Olive and three brothers.

Francis set up two trust funds in 1909 for his descendants, thought to be worth several million pounds in today’s money.

His sons were all killed in World War One, apparently childless. So Olive and Anne were the sole beneficiaries of both the trust and the £70,538 he left in his will

in 1921 – equivalent to £10 million today. As Anne never married or had children, her share passed to Olive’s children. One of them was Kate’s grandfather, Peter Middleton, who could have used this to fund his own family’s education.

When Miss Moberly-Bell died in April 1967 she bequeathed her belongings to Miss Lupton, who died only eight months later.

Kate Middleton is set to hold her royal wedding hen night at a new bar called 86 on London’s Fulham Road after celebrating her 29th birthday there with friends last week.

‘She loves it because the staff are discreet and she knows the owner,’ says a pal.

Last week it was revealed that Prince William's stag night is set to be a low-key affair.

Owners of his favourite night spot, Mahiki, have sent over cases of their signature rum to Clarence House ahead of the bash, which is being organised by Prince Harry and the club's former employee Guy Pelly.

William wants a low-key venue for his stag night so instead of going to Mahiki, Mahiki will come to them,’ says a friend.

‘Bosses have sent crates of the rum, used in the club’s Polynesian-themed cocktails, for the boys to enjoy.’

Meanwhile, Kate’s mother Carole, 55, and her sister Pippa, 27, enjoyed lunch at Princess Diana’s favourite restaurant, San Lorenzo in Knightsbridge, last Tuesday.

‘They were treated like royalty,’ says a fellow diner.

Prince Philip set for 90th birthday interviews

Prince Philip will give not one, but two interviews to the BBC and ITV to celebrate his 90th birthday in June. The TV appearances will be in addition to the planned thanksgiving service at Windsor.

‘The Duke didn’t want a big fuss made, but the Queen was determined to mark this milestone,’ says a courtier. ‘He will speak to the BBC and ITV about his life and work.’



Prince Charles turns down Price's polo event

Both Prince Charles and polo player Jack Kidd have given the cold shoulder to a snow polo event Katie Price is sponsoring in Klosters.

The 32-year-old glamour model is backing the junior tournament at the Berenberg Snow Polo in Switzerland next week.

But a source said: ‘Some players worry her presence will bring too much bling. The other concern is she thinks she can play polo as she can ride – she can’t. Prince Charles declined his invitation and Jack Kidd pulled out of the event at the last minute.’

The model, also known as Jordan, was famously upset when she was not invited to the Cartier Polo International match in July 2008.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding has put paid to a favourite Royal past-time next year – skiing.

Most of the young Royals have had to put plans on ice for 2011 as the April 29 royal wedding coincides with the end of the season – when the Royals traditionally hit the slopes.

‘Prince Harry was invited to stay with pals in a fabulous chalet in Val D’Isere but he won’t be able to make it,’ says a spy at the Club Bellevarde VIP lodge.

‘Beatrice and Eugenie look doubtful too. No one wants to risk breaking limbs days before the wedding.’

The world first glimpsed William and Kate as a couple when they were spotted kissing in Klosters in 2004.

Meanwhile, Kate is to embark on a sailing course so she can join William on the waves.

Kate, 28,is unable to play polo, William’s favourite sport, as she is allergic to horses.

But William, also 28, has bought her a course of sailing lessons for Christmas.

‘William loves to sail and Kate wants to share in one of his passions,’ says a source.

‘William hopes if she gains confidence through lessons, they could have a great shared hobby,’ the source adds.

Fergie flooded with TV offers in U.S.

THE Duchess of York has had 28 offers from U.S. TV channels to commentate on the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton – but has rejected them all, much to the relief of the Royal Family.

There were fears Fergie, 51, would use the nuptials to clear the remainder of the £5 million debt that put her at risk of bankruptcy.

But her spokesman says: ‘She’s not interested.’

Harry meets his match

Prince Harry met his match last week when he jokingly refused to pay his tab for cocktails at Chelsea nightclub Public, owned by his best friend Guy Pelly.

A spy says: ‘Harry told his waitress, “I’m a Prince, I’m not paying the bill,” but she retorted, “Well I’m a waitress and I need a tip.”

Guy was always going to waive the bill and the whole thing was flirtatious banter. Harry and the waitress were in fits of giggles.’

Kate Middleton took time out of planning her own wedding to attend the nuptials of close friends Honourable Sarah Louise Stourton and Harry Aubrey-Fletcher today.

With her fiance Prince William on duty as an usher, his bride-to-be arrived solo at the church service in the North Yorkshire village of Aldborough.

But she was in good company with future brother-in-law Prince Harry in attendance, as well as his cousin Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend Dave Clark.

Despite temperatures hovering around zero and snow on the ground, the princess-in-waiting braved the freezing temperatures with her bare legs on show under her fitted knee-length black velvet coat.

Miss Middleton, who turns 29 tomorrow, accessorised her outfit with a tilted black pillbox hat with a lone feather sticking out of it and matching purple heels and clutch bag.

After years of dating, it was the first wedding the couple had attended since officially announcing their engagement last year.

The last wedding they attended together - of Harry and Rosie Meade - in October took place just days after they got engaged on holiday in Kenya.

But Miss Middleton's sapphire and diamond ring was absent as the couple did not announce their engagement until November 16.

Meanwhile, Princess Beatrice, 22, looked chic in a navy coat, matching court shoes and a royal blue fascinator on the crown of her head.

The 28-year-old groom, whose father is Sir Henry, Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, is one of Prince William's closest friends.

Over the years, Miss Middleton has got to know the bride, with the four even holidaying together in Klosters, Switzerland in 2008.

The new Mr and Mrs Aubrey-Fletcher have also joined Prince William and his future wife on hunting parties.

Arriving at St Andrews Church, the 28-year-old bride covered her floor-length wedding gown in a white bridal coat, with her bridesmaids also wearing coats as they carried her train through the snowy church yard.

The bride, who is known to her friends as Louise, is the daughter of Edward William Stourton, 24th Baron Stourton, 27th Baron Mowbray, 28th Baron Segrave and his wife Penelope.

She is the niece of Radio 4 Today presenter Edward Stourton and was born in the Harrogate District in 1982.

Also in attendance at the wedding were regulars of the Princes' social circle, including Holly Branson, Glasses Direct millionaire Jamie Murray-Wells, club owner Guy Pelly, Tom Van Straubezee and William's former Eton schoolmate James Meade and his brother Harry.

Supporting the bride were her younger siblings Isabella Laura, 27; Camilla Charlotte, 23; Francesca Jane, 22; and James Charles, 19.

And on the groom's side were his older brothers John Robert, 33, and Thomas Egerton, 30.

Among the gifts on their wedding list include cream Jasper Conran crockery, a croquet set, Monopoly and Scrabble.

After the service, the guests were transported five miles away to the reception at Allerton Park via double-decker bus.

Kate Middleton may be one of the most famous former pupils of Marlborough College, but youngsters at the school have been told they will not get the day off for the Royal Wedding.

Instead they will be expected to be on best behaviour for film crews who are set to descend on the school to report live on the wedding day.

Sources say sixth-formers at the £29,310-a-year Wiltshire boarding school have been told they must gather for a meeting next Monday to be briefed about plans for April 29.

But while cameras may be welcomed on the big day, Kate’s parents Carole and Mike Middleton have requested that in the meantime the school clamps down on any mention of Kate.

One pupil at the college, where Princess Eugenie also studied, said: ‘The school is making detailed plans for that weekend.

Another said: ‘It is likely that there will be a set-up of the live footage in our Memorial Hall and it is expected that media will be present. We will have lessons in the morning followed by a class-free afternoon to help out and watch.’

A spokeswoman for the school’s

Master, Nicholas Sampson, said: ‘The Palace did say they were looking at the school and may organise something directly and with the Press.

‘We have been advised not to participate in any Press interest at the moment.’ A Buckingham Palace spokesman declined to comment.
